Ludhiana, June 12
Several cases of dengue have been reported from different parts of the city during the past two days. An official of the Health Department, while confirming these cases, disclosed that four cases were reported from the city and one case was reported from Ferozepore district.
In Ludhiana the cases have been reported from Daba Colony,
Shimlapuri, Sai Kalan and Model Town. One patient has been admitted to Christian Medical College and Hospital. However, no death has been reported due to dengue fever this year, revealed the Health Department officials, revealed.
It may be mentioned that the deadly disease caused a number of deaths in the city last year. Dr Rajinder
Kaur, Civil Surgeon, while talking to Ludhiana Tribune said that 970 dengue cases were reported in the district in 1999 and 365 cases were reported last year.
Dr Gursharan Singh, president, local unit of the Indian Medical Association, said the fever was caused due to mosquito bite. He said: “The virus goes to the body. It destroys the platelets, the essential constituent of blood, which keeps it thick. Blood becomes thin due to loss of platelets and patient gets high fever, body ache, fatigue, bleeding. There are constitutional symptoms of the virus”.
Dr Rajinder Kaur said that department was gearing up to meet any eventuality. She said in the month of June, various anti-malaria and anti-dengue activities will be conducted in the city. “The Pits will be thoroughly covered and DDT and black oil will be sprayed in the pits so that there can be no breeding”, said the Civil Surgeon.
The department also plans to organise awareness camps in schools and seminars for the teachers. “The Health Department with the cooperation of corporation officials plans to visit different areas in the city to check the preventive measures adopted by the residents”, added Dr Rajinder
Kaur.
Meanwhile, two cases of plasmodium falciparium have also been reported in the city. One of the officials at the Health Department said 305 slides were taken from the affected area and the results were negative. “The two cases were the affected ones. One of them is a migrant labourer and one a retired Army personnel is from
Moradpur”, said the Health Department official.
