Review radiation treatment: AERB
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 12
Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has asked radiotherapy centres in India to review the radiation treatment procedures, which use computerised treatment planning systems, for cancer patients.

This is in light of information from the International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA) on a radiological emergency at the National Oncology Institute ( NOI) in Panama. The emergency involved radiotherapy machine and a computerised treatment planning system for calculating the radiation dose to be delivered to cancer patients.

IAEA had reported that out of 28 patients who suffered due to emergency eight died. The death of atleast five of them might be attributable to radiation overexposure. Dr K.S Parthasarathy, secretary of the board, in a release stated that improper entry of data into the computer attached to the treatment planning system might have caused the emergency.

AERB has asked all centres across the country to identify whether their systems will provide automatic warning for typical or potentially significant data entry errors. They are also required to inform AERB of the steps being taken to prevent overexposures of the type referred to in the notice.
