Rid your fridge of odours

SINCE refrigerators are put to maximum use in the hot, summer months—what with the excessive demand for chilled water, loads of ice, etc— it is essential to keep them spotlessly clean and odour-free.

Certain simple steps can be followed to defrost your refrigerator, clean the inner shelves and to put it to optimum use by storing in it things other than the conventional eatables and drinks.

  • To speed up defrosting, use a hairdryer to blow hot air into the refrigerator.

  • You can prevent its door from closing during defrosting by placing a folded towel on the door.

  • Take out all removable shelves and drawers and wash them with a soapy solution.

  • To clean the interior, dissolve 1 tsp of soda bicarbonate in a bowl of warm water and wipe all nooks and crannies with this solution.

  • To reach small corners and to clean the grooved areas, you can use an old tooothpaste dipped in the solution.

  • Dry off with a towel. Then again wipe with a moist cloth dipped in glycerine.

  • To absorb bad smells, mix 4 tsp mustard seeds in a cup of water and place inside the refrigerator.

  • If there is mould or a musty smell in any part of the machine, get rid of it by washing it with vinegar and water or lime juice.

  • If your refrigerator makes too much sound, try levelling its feet by placing cards or cardboard beneath them.

  • To keep fruits and vegetables fresh for a longer time, line the vegetable drawer with brown paper. It absorbs the excess moisture. keep changing it regularly.

  • In fact, bananas last longer if stored in a refrigerator. Though their skin might start looking black, the insides remain fresh and they don’t get overripe.

  • You can be innovative and also store things like lipsticks, batteries, camera films, candles and other paraphernalia in the refrigerator.

  • Even damp clothes which have to be ironed can be put in a plastic bag and placed in an empty drawer of the refrigerator. This way they don’t get mouldy and are always ready for ironing.

  • You can use the ice trays to store leftover tomato puree, instant soups, etc, in the form of ice cubes.

  • Egg cartons can also be used to freeze extra ice.
