Gombar re-elected ISA chief

Prof K. Gombar, Head, Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, GMCH, has been re-elected as president of the local branch of the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologist (ISA). During an annual meeting of the ISA, Dr S.K. Malhotra, Additional Professor, Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care PGI, was elected as vice- president, Dr Rajeev Malhotra, secretary and Dr Sanjeev Palta, treasurer of the association.

Later, speaking at the scientific session, Dr S.K. Malhotra said recent Gujarat earthquake and Orissa cyclone had made everyone realise the need for a fool proof disaster management plan.

Professor Gombar stressed that following a disaster a thorough co-ordination between clinical and administrative staff was required, right from evacuation to the transfer of patient to the hospital.

Admn to look into Joshi’s candidature

The UT Administration will look into the matter relating to Dr R.M. Joshi, Professor and Head of Microbiology Department, GMCH, Sector 32, to ascertain if he is eligible for the post of professor as of today or not.

The Secretary, Medical Education and Research, has asked the GMCH authorities to provide all necessary papers so that his eligibility for the post can be ascertained.

The Union Public Service Commission had conveyed to the Administration that Dr Joshi’s candidature had been cancelled and that when he was appointed, he was not eligible for the post. The administration will also study what will be the course of action if he has to be removed immediately or asked to continue till a fresh appointment is made. A decision in this regard is expected by Monday, sources add.

Dr Joshi has filed an appeal against the order in the Central Administrative Tribunal and the next hearing has been fixed for July 17.

AIDS awareness through paintings

The Drug Awareness and Counselling Centre of the Servants of the People Society yesterday organised an inter- school painting competition to spread awareness health hazards of tobacco consumption. The competition was held at the Lajpat Rai Bhavan, Sector 15, here.

Students from nine government schools of the city took part in the competition. Prof. N. N. Wig, a psychiatrist, was the chief guest. In his presidential remarks Professor Wig praised the young students for taking part in the competition Mr Onar Chand, secretary of the society, also spoke on the occasion.

Understanding on waste disposal

The Nursing Homes Association (NHA) has reportedly reached an understanding with the General Hospital, Sector 16, for disposal of biomedical waste.

Sources say the department of Medical Officer Health (MoH) will now be responsible for collection of biomedical waste from the nursing homes and take it for disposal to the incinerator in the General Hospital. This has been done following the June 15 deadline, set by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, following a notification which says all hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, dispensaries, veterinary institutions, animal houses, pathological laboratories and blood banks in the city will have to take necessary steps as per rules and regulations to ensure no adverse effect occurs to human health and environment. Failure to obtain authorisation by June 15 will attract legal action under the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act .

Another doctor relieved for doing private practice

Chandigarh , May 30
Dr Sudha Jain, Head of the Department of Psychiatry at General Hospital in Sector 16, whose name figured in the list of doctors doing private practice, was today relieved from service. She has served the Chandigarh Administration for 22 years.

According to sources, Dr S.K. Bhalla of the Department of Psychiatry in the Sector 22 Polyclinic will replace Dr Jain in the Sector 16 hospital.

30-bed hospital inaugurated

Dera Bassi, May 30
The Punjab Health Systems Corporation, will spend Rs 421 crore on construction of new buildings of hospitals and dispensaries apart from installing modern equipment in these to provide better healthcare services to the public. The government has constructed 152 new health centres with ultra modern equipment so far.

This was stated by Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Finance and Planning Minister of Punjab, after inaugurating the building of a 30-bed hospital constructed at a cost of Rs 1.15 crore in Dera Bassi, here yesterday.

DAVSSS-8, GGSSS-8 overall champions

Chandigarh, May 30
DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, in boys’ and Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, among girls’ section were adjudged overall champions the session 2000-2001 at the annual prize distribution function of the UT schools sports events held during the years 1999-2001. The function was held today at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32.

The overall trophy for boys athletics went to Government Senior Secondary School, Karsan for the session 2000-2001. Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, secured the overall trophy among boys for the 1999-2000 session while Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, were adjudged overall champions among girls.

Chandigarh had also excelled in judo, roller hockey and lawn tennis events. The city players won eight gold, six silver and 18 bronze medals in the National School Games during the current year while six gold, five silver and 21 bronze medals were won in the session 1999-2000. Two players of Sanjay Public School, Sector-44, represented Indian schools team in the Asian Schools Football Meet held at Bangkok last year.

Surprisingly there was no mention of Gurpreet Kaur of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, who was able to win a bronze medal in the Junior Asian Rowing Meet held at Chandigarh in December, 2000.

Mr D.S. Saroya, DPI Schools, UT, was the chief guest. He gave away the trophies to the winners.

Squash meet

Harinder Pal Singh of Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, who is among three boys who are away to Selangor (Malaysia), today played valiantly and reached the third round of the Malaysian Open Junior Squash Tournament which began today. As per fax message received here, in the under-13 section, Mahir Singh after winning the first round tie against Mohd Izzudin of Malaysia in three games lost in the second round after playing a tough match with Heng Guo Lian of Malaysia. Jai Singh Sekhon, too, like Mahir lost in the second round to Russel of Australia after winning first match from Han Wei Kiat of Malaysia.

Results: under-15: Section: first round: Jai Sekhon b Han Wei (Mal), 9-2,9-4,9-6; second round: Jai Sekhon lost to Russel Wegnr( Aus) 7-9,3-9,5-9; under-13 section first round: Mahir Singh b Mohd Izzudin (Mal), 9-3,9-6,9-4; second round: Mahir Singh lost to Heng Guo (Mal), 9-7,4-9,2-9,6-9.

Summer cricket

Chandigarh Sports Club defeated Satluj Coaching Centre by 42 runs in the ‘C’ division of 5th UT Summer Cricket League match played here today at the Sector 16 cricket stadium.
