— Surinder A Please check for any bad sectors in your hard disk, by running scandisk in thorough mode or in DOS mode. If you find any bad sectors in your hard disk, get it fixed or even change the hard disk depending on the number of bad clusters. If you do not find bad sectors in your hard disk, then you can first try reinstalling Windows on your computer. However, if the problem still persists, then you must get your motherboard checked for any kind of errors.
Q I have an assembled computer with configurations Pentium III, 500 MHz, 10.2 GB hard disk, Motorola 56 KBS internal modem, 52X Samsung CD drive and Windows ’98 (not second edition) as OS with a Logitech scroll mouse having middle click button. Initially when I purchased the system, the scroll button of mouse was working properly in Word 2000 and also on the Web pages while logging on to network. Due to some reasons I have to format my system and after that my mouse is not scrolling anymore. Please suggest how I can configure my mouse again. I have not got any drive from my PC vendor and he also could not understand the actual problem. — Vivek Chawla, Hoshiarpur A In order to solve this problem all you need to do is install the mouse driver that you must have got along with your mouse. In most of the scrolling mouse, you need to install the driver in order to activate the scrolling function. However, if you do not install the driver, then it would work like a normal mouse without scrolling. In your case same thing is happening, because when you format your hard disk, then the driver got erased and since you never reinstalled it that’s why the scroll function does not working. If you do not have the mouse driver floppy, then please contact the vendor for the duplicate driver floppy or visit the site of the mouse manufacturer for downloading the necessary software. Q I am having 466Mhz, 64Mb RAM, 8.4GB Hard disk and Microteck internal modem (56 Kbps) with Windows Me installed. My ISP is Glide. When I am using the Internet, my connection usually disconnects after every 8 to 10 minutes. Tell me about some hardware and software settings that I can use to decrease the disconnection activity. My second problem is that sometimes my computer reboots after 1to 2 hours when I am using the Internet. — Raman Garg, Malout A For disconnecting Internet connection many things can be responsible. These factors could be internal as well as external. Among the internal factors, excessive extensions, fax machines, worn-out telephone line, disturbance in telephone line and loose connections are the main points which needs to be considered. Whereas in external factors, line conditions in your area, features of telephone exchange and also the distance of the place where the computer is to be used are some of the main factors. However, you can check for the internal factors and correct them, wherever necessary for possible disconnection. You can also add an extra settings S10=50 in the advanced tab of your modem configuration. Regarding your second problem, please check your electricity connection and also the UPS for any problems. You may also get your SMPS checked for any problems. Q I have an HP Brio P III 800 with 20 GB HDD, 64 MB RAM. I use my PC mainly for home purpose i.e. surfing, songs and playing games. I purchased it about 3 months ago. Within a few weeks of purchasing, it started giving problems. I called up my dealer and he sent me an engineer. He formatted my computer and created 3 partitions on it. After that I installed various software from the supplied CDs and also from my friends. Since past half-a-month, it has started giving problems. I repeatedly get "illegal operation" and "fatal exception error" messages. I get these messages minutes after starting my PC. By far the most common message is "explorer has performed an illegal operation…" Once I got a message saying, "A fatal exception error has occurred at 017F:BFF9DBA7". Kindly solve my problem. — Rajat Narang, Ludhiana AThe problem mentioned normally
occurs if you install Windows ’98 from files copied to a folder on a
local hard disk (not from the CD-ROM), or during the installation of an
Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) version of Windows ’98. This
error is primarily because of a problem in the Dblbuff.sys file under
certain rare timing conditions. For the solution of this problem a fix
is available from Microsoft. Please visit http://support.microsoft.com/directory/overview.asp
for finding a fix for this problem. |
