Bridge over difficulties
By H.C. Gera

AT the intersection of old and new Panchkula, near the traffic lights, there is a bridge across the Ghaggar river which is connected to the Nada Sahib Gurdwara. Over this bridge the traffic passes to Morni Hills and Ramgarh.

The bridge also offers a convenient place for performing astrological rituals and remedies to ward off the evil effects of the planets. People from Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali and nearby areas flock here, mostly on Saturdays, for carrying out the remedies suggested by astrologers. There are two main reasons why people prefer this place for this purpose. The area is easily accessible and the water flows under this bridge throughout the year. Since people are generally advised by the astrologers to throw certain things in running or flowing water only, this spot is ideal.

The bridge across the Ghaggar riverThe upayas suggested by astrologers are performed at this place on all days, especially Saturdays. On the basis of the planetary position of a person, the remedies suggested entail throwing certain commodities and items in running water. These items include coconut, black gram, black til, black urad, lead and almonds. These items are sometimes tied in a black cloth before being thrown in the running water. Gur, patasha (made of sugar), rewris (made of sugar and til), piece of copper with a hole are also thrown in flowing water to propitiate the Gods. Sometimes articles such as coal, jawar, barley washed in milk, cucumber, piece of iron and nails are also thrown in flowing water.

Astrologers claim that upayas are based on scientific canons and are not arbitrary. They require patience. A minimum of 40-43 days’ time is required for them to yield fruit. The upayas should be done by the affected person and in case he/she is unable to do so, they can be performed by the nearest blood relation. All methods of propitiation have to be performed between sunrise and sunset.

Reciting mantras, performing upayas, giving donations, fasting and feasting are some other remedies which are also carried out. Likewise gem therapy, colour therapy and wearing yantras are some other remedies advised by astrologers.

On the basis of planetary influences, individuals can be categorised into three groups. These groups are based on the mental constitution of the individual. A sattvik person is influenced by the sun, moon and Jupiter. A rajsik is influenced by Venus and Mercury and the tamsik by Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu.
