Palledars resent non-payment of wages, irregularities
D. B. Chopra

Ahmadgarh, May 16
Resentment is brewing among 118 members of the Punjab Pradesh Palledar Mazdoor Union(PPPMU) here against the non-payment of their wages for the past more than three months and certain irregularities with regard to payment and loading of trains called ‘wheat specials’ at the local railway station.

In their latest application to the Deputy Commissioner, Sangrur, copies of which have also been sent to the Food and Supplies Minister, Panjab, the Labour Commissioner and other authorities, the union has drawn the attention of the authorities to the fact that its members have been loading these ‘wheat specials’ at the local railway station since long but now a labour contractor, Nizamdin, in connivance with the Assistant Manager of the FCI’s local depot, are trying to put 32 of their own men on the same job.

The members alleged that earlier also an attempt had been made to employ the same 32 men at the FCI depot which was opposed by an independent union of the depot as a result of which the matter had been referred to a court at Malerkotla. After the court ruling against their employment at the FCI, these men were now trying to create trouble at the behest of Nizamdin and Mr. K. Verma, Assistant manager of the FCI depot.

The application further said that the said accused were trying to put their men on this job because the FCI was paying Rs 1.88p per bag for loading at a railway head. In gross violation of their rights, the members of the PPPMU were being paid only 90 paise per bag. They were being denied their due labour wages. And for the past three months, they had not been paid even at the rate of 90 paise per bag as a result of which the economic condition of the union members had become quite bad.

The application concluded with a request for a suitable legal action against the conniving officials and early payment of their due wages.

Since the union members were apprehensive about an impending confrontation, the application also stated that if any confrontation occured in the near future, Mr. K. L. Verma should be held responsible for that.

Mr. Amarjit Singh Dhaler, president, PPPMU, told Ludhiana Tribune that last year, they had succeeded in getting a balance payment of more than Rs. 11 lakh following an order by the Panjab and Haryana High Court. He urged the authorities to do the needful at the earliest failing which the affected palledars would resort to dharnas and gate rallies.
