Jammu, May 15
At least 17 persons, including a police official, were wounded three of them critically, when militants hurled a grenade on a police station in Kishtwar town in the troubled Doda district today.

The critically wounded were being brought to Jammu by road in the absence of helicopter facilities. A report said one person had succumbed to his injuries. The police said the militants had targeted the police station but missed the target and the grenade exploded on the road, wounding over 17 persons, including three women.

Additional security forces have been rushed to the area and massive search operations have been launched.

Meanwhile, a report from Srinagar said the militants made an abortive attempt on the life of the Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, and killed a counter-insurgent associated with the Ikhwan in south Kashmir last night, the police said today.

Deputy Commissioner G.A. Peer had a miraculous escape when the militants detonated a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) and fired at his motorcade near Anantnag district in south Kashmir.

The windscreen of Mr Peer’s bulletproof vehicle was damaged in the explosion, but no one was injured in the ensuing shootout.

Mr Peer, who had gone to visit Manigam village in the district, was on his way back to the headquarters when the militants struck.

In another incident in Anantnag, the militants shot an Ikhwan activist, Manzoor Ahmad Rather, at Guri-Bijbehara late last night.

In another incident, 10 persons, including seven militants and two army jawans, were killed in Poonch district of Jammu division where the security forces defused two IEDs and recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, official sources said.
