Drinking water crisis in PGI
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 15
Patients visiting the PGI and the staff working there are faced with a severe drinking water crisis these days. Finding a source of drinking water in the PGI is a task in itself. The problem has aggravated more due to lack of coordination and planning on part of the hospital administration and the engineering wing of the PGI.

Patients complain that the PGI, despite having crores of rupees in its budget, has failed to meet the basic need. PGI officials also admit that the problem exists. Administrative officials blame the engineering department for the problem.

Although the PGI is in the process of procuring 17 new water coolers, the officials are finding it difficult to find a suitable place for these as on several of the floors, especially in the Advanced Paediatric Center (APC), there is no provision for outlet of water. Moreover, the points provided are either near toilets or in narrow corridors, they add.

All this is causing inconvenience to more than 3,000 patients who visit the new OPD, APC and the Nehru Hospital every day. This number does not include those admitted as indoor patients. Add to this the number of attendants, accompanying relatives and the administrative staff and the number swells up to 10,000.

Now, consider the drinking water facilities. In the newly built Rs 22 crore five-storeyed OPD, there are only two water coolers, one at the main reception and the other on the third floor, “B” Block.

In the APC, there is one water cooler each on the second, third and the fourth floors, respectively. Interestingly the Nehru Hospital, where till March last all the OPDs were operating from, has only three water coolers and all of these are on the ground floor. So those visiting doctors, clinics or those in the wards have to fend for themselves or buy bottled water.

Officials say the issue has been discussed in detail and it has been agreed upon that there should be a water cooler on every floor. The PGI Superintending Hospital Engineer, Mr G.S. Rosha, says PGI is in the process of setting up chilling units at the roof tops and it will be functional from the next year, “Our objective is to provide a water cooler at each floor, subject to availability of funds,” PGI administrative officials said.

Kiosks, jhuggis removed
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 15
Three illegal ‘kiosks’ and three jhuggis were removed in Palsora Colony by the enforcement staff of the Estate Office today. As many as 164 challans were issued by the staff of the MC enforcement wing, perhaps the highest so far in various parts of the city. The focus of the drive was on the unauthorised vendors outside the Apni Mandi in Sector 40.

According to information available, 70 challans were issued in and around the weekly Apni Mandi in Sector 40. The violators mostly included the rehri and phari vendors and others who had encroached upon MC land.

About 23 challans were issued in the Mani Majra area beyond the railway station traffic lights, right upto Panchkula, in which the focus was on the roadside vendors, besides others.

According to police sources, that an enforcement inspector was reportedly manhandled by the shopkeepers during the drive.

Nearly 71 challans issued in Sectors 17, 18, 19, 28, 29, 30, 32, 46 and 47, mostly to the shopkeepers who had displayed their products in the public corridors.

The Enforcement Magistrate, UT, Mr Ishwar Singh, said the staff would be targetting the apni mandis in different sectors so as to get rid of these encroachers.

These encroachers had a tendency to fleece the customer by charging higher prices and selling not so fresh products. All this brought a bad name to the apni mandis.

The unauthorised vendors, who did not have a stay would also be targetted in the Sector 26 kisan mandi in the next few days.

The concept of apni mandi was introduced in the city by the present Chief Election Commisioner, Dr M.S. Gill. He was the Agriculture Commissioner of Punjab then.

The idea behind this was to encourage the small farmers to get their produce to these mandis and sell them directly to the consumers at reasonable prices.
