Yauvan Mangal Mela concludes

Chandigarh , April 30
The fortnight-long “Yauvan Mangal Mela” concluded here today, with an AIDS/HIV, Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) and Reproductive Tract Infection (RTI) awareness camp, which was conducted at the Burail jail. As many as 100 prisoners attended the camp and 26 blood samples were collected for further investigations.

The camp, organised by the State AIDS Control Society, under the Government of India’s, Family Health Awareness Campaign, was aimed at providing diagnosis and free treatment to the target population, mainly those residing in the slums, colonies and villages of the UT, to encourage prevention, detection and prompt treatment of AIDS, STDs and RTIs. Today’s camp was in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social welfare, a non government organisation.

Senior Medical Officer, Dr Rajiv Vadhera, from General Hospital, Sector 16. Dr Vandana Dewan and Ms Monica Dhir from the State AIDS Control Society, addressed jail inmates on the dangerous implications of these highly-communicable diseases.

The society, together with members of various NGOs sensitised over 10,000 people during the 17 camps organised during the past 15 days, during which, as many as 1,713 persons availed of diagnosis and treatment facilities and 233 blood samples were collected for further investigations. Doctors from the departments of Dermatology and Venereology, PGI, provided specialised treatment.

The Song and Drama division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, besides “anganwadi” workers of the Social Welfare Department and “preraks” of the Adult Education Department too, were actively involved in motivating people to attend the camps.

Delegates visit centres for disabled

Delegates attending the workshop on orientation training of trainers in disability prevention and rehabilitation were today taken on a field visit to various institutions dealing with disability prevention and rehabilitation.

Organised by the Department of Orthopaedics, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, the workshop has been sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO). According to the GMCH Medical Superintendent, Prof Raj Bahadur, who was the nodal officer of the programme, delegates were introduced to methods of teaching the visually impaired at Institute for the Blind, Sector 26, Government Institute of Mentally Retarded, Sector 32 , Prayas Centre, Sector 38, and Navedac Prosthetic Centre, Zirakpur. At the Navedac centre, the delegates were apprised of advancements in biomechanical techniques for artificial limbs. The aim of this three-day workshop was to sensitise delegates about latest techniques in use for children with special needs.

According to Prof Raj Bahadur, under the Gramin Punarvas Yojna for disability prevention and rehabilitation, the District Rehabilitation Centre (DRC) in the GMCH was in the process of identifying 200 persons in the UT to work under the project. The project would be aided by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, which had allocated Rs 80 lakh for it. A total of 35 persons had been identified, who would be trained for identifying and directing the disabled to the resource centre in the DRC for rehabilitation.

Anmol is chess champion

Chandigarh, April 30
Anmol Razdan, a student of Tender Heart School, Sector 9, clinched the UT Under-18 Chess Championship which concluded here at the Chess Centre, Sector 42 sports complex, here last evening. The two-day meet was organised by the Chandigarh Chess Association. The second prize was bagged by Ripudaman Singh. Meanwhile, the CCA has selected four players, including two girls, for the National Junior Chess Championship going to be held at Hyderabad next month.

The final point position is:

4.5 pts — Anmol Razdan; 4 pts —Ripudaman Singh; 3.5 pts — Chetan Vikas and Rohit Chodha; 3 pts — Mohit Arora, Ranjit Singh Badwal, Mandeep Singh and Divya Singh Jamwal; 2.5 pts — Shweta and Manpreet Singh; 2 pts — Preeti, Sahil Bhatia and Chander Vikas; 1 pt — Mohit Malhotra, Abhishek Suri and Japreet.

Basketball championship
The Chandigarh Basketball Association will hold a sub-junior mini boys and girls state championship for the first time on small-sized adjustable basketball nets at IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, from May 3 to 5, said Mr K.S. Bharti, secretary of the association. The players born on or after January 1, 1988, will be eligible to take part in it. Bharti said the UT team for the 28th Sub-Junior Mini National Basketball Championship, to be held at Kapurthala from June 2 to 7, would be selected on the basis of performance of players during the state championship. Thirty boys and girls will be selected for a 20-day coaching camp prior to their participation in the national meet. Entries close with Ms Paramjit Kaur, basketball coach, at the Basketball Coaching Centre, Sector 16.

Cricket tourney
The inaugural match of the Pandit Chaman Lal Memorial Cricket Tournament for under-16 section being organised by the Mohali Cricket Association will be played tomorrow between the Mohali team and the team of Lawrence School, SAS Nagar, at 8.30 a.m.

Transfers 
In the routine transfers by the UT Sports Department, Mr Kashmira Singh, manager, Sports Complex, Sector 7, has been transferred to the Lake Club, Sector 7, while Mr Mewa Singh, earlier manager at the Lake Club, has been given fresh orders for badminton hall, Sector 42. Mewa Singh will retire on May 31. Ishwar Singh who was manager at badminton hall has been transferred to the Sports Complex, Sector 7.
