Admn order to cable operators
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 27
Citing instructions from the Government of India, the Chandigarh Administration today said that cable operators cannot broadcast obscene programmes or channels at night or at any other time. Advertisement of tobacco, including tobacco products, liquor (alcohol) and infant milk products, cannot be made on TV or on cable networks.

A spokesperson of the Administration said the Information and Broadcasting Ministry had enacted the Cable Television Network Amendment Act, 2000, and issued these instructions. Also on the list of instructions is that cable operators cannot show films on their channels for which they have not obtained authorisation from copyright owners of the film. The cable operators have to necessarily offer DD-I, DD-II and regional channel of Doordarshan, as notified by the Prasar Bharti.

The Amendment Act has given authority to district magistrates, SDMs and police commissioners to take action under the Cable Television Networks Act against the offending cable operators. The Act authorises these officials to seize the equipment being used by the cable operators.
