Dr Tribune

I am having a problem with my Internet. I have a P II processor, 266 MHz. I have 20 GB HDD, 96 MB RAM. I have 2 partitions. I have installed NT4.0 and Windows millennium on second partition. Whenever I connect to the Internet, the speed does not increase. It cannot receive data. However I can send data. Sometimes it is not able to either send or receive data. I use Microsoft Internet explorer 5.0 and have used 3 setting of modems which are,

s10=50

atx1s13=91

atx0s10=200s37=12

I have internal Motorola modem. Even after applying these settings I still face this problem. Please tell me which operating system is better for Net surfing.

— Amit

Dr Tribune: First of all I suggest you to remove all extra settings from the modem settings and then check the performance of your computer. By default the modem is configured to standard settings, which is expected to perform well in normal working conditions and advanced settings are being used when there is something abnormal. If after removing the extra settings from the advance settings in your modem configuration, this problem is solved then do not use them, else check your telephone line for cuts, joints, peeling off, or for other errors. Also, remove unnecessary extensions and fax machine before using the Internet. As far as the operating systems are concerned, I found Windows 2000 to be better than others. However, Windows NT, Windows 98 SE are also quite good.

I am regular reader of the Login Tribune and have a problem with my PC. I use Wintune software use to check the hardware value and working. The result that is surprising is that it shows the installed RAM is 63MB but only 5MB of RAM is free. I regularly empty the Recycle Bin, temporary files. There is no background and screensaver in use. The configuration of my PC is 500 MHz Celeron, 10.2 GB HDD, OS Windows ’98, anti-virus PC-cillin ’98.

Dr Tribune: Please unload all the unnecessary drivers, games and other memory resident programs, which are not frequently required but consume a lot of your precious memory space. Also the use of anti-virus software consumes a lot of memory, though it is essential to keep them in your PC. Also, if you are not using LAN and have these drivers installed on your system, you should also remove them. Also reduce your start-up list. All these measures will solve your problem. For further betterment, if your have ample free hard disk space, then please increase the size of swap file.

I have a month long assembled PC with the following configuration — P-III 700 Mhz, 64 MB RAM,52 X CDROM,20 GB hard disk, 15’LG monitor, Mercury motherboard, Motorola internal modem

My problems are:

1. Usually I receive the following message with the blue screen " Windows terminating thread due to stack overflow problem. A VXD, possibly recently installed has consumed too much stack space. Increase the setting of "MINSPS" in system.ini or remove recently installed VXD’S. There are currently 6SPS allocated. Press any key to continue," I do not know why this message is displayed. Hard disk is hardly 40 per cent full.

2. Another message that appears when the system boots up is "The following file is missing or corrupted C:\ CDROM\ GSCDROM.SYS.There is an error in your cofig.sys file on line 2"

3. My hard disk has developed 6 bad clusters. This happens when I did not have the UPS. Now that I have purchased the UPS what should I do? Should I continue with these bad clusters or should I try to replace the hard disk.

4. When the system file checker checked the files 3 KB of files were found corrupt. When I wanted to replace these, I did not find them in the installation disk.

5. The middle button of mouse is not functioning.

Dr Tribune: It appears that you are using Norton AntiVirus on your system, as this problem can be associated to the Norton AntiVirus. Windows setting that is set too low causes this problem. However, the solution of this problem depends upon the version of this program you are using. If you are using Version 2001, then this has been fixed by a program update. Therefore for correcting this problem, please close all programs, run LiveUpdate, and select the Norton AntiVirus program update. After the updation, restart the computer. However, for other versions, some changes and modifications in config.sys and system.ini files are required. In the config.sys add or modify (as the case may be) the following entries:

FILES=150 (set to 200 if on a network)

BUFFERS=80

STACKS=12,256

In system.ini files, add or modify the following value:

MinSPs=4. Now save these settings and restart your computer.

On restarting your computer you will find that this problem has disappeared.

Regarding your second problem, you must reinstall your CD driver from the floppy disk or CD provided by the CD manufacturer. Bad cluster on your hard disk is a matter of great concern and requires immediate attention. Since your PC is new so your hard disk must be under warranty. You must contact your hardware vendor and get your hard disk replaced with a new one. You must always use the UPS as it protects your system.

Regarding the middle mouse button, it has to be configured before using it. So, if you have not configured it, then please do it before using.

I have an assembled computer with P-III 700 MHz Processor, 64 MB RAM, 10 GB Hard Disc and Crystal WDM Audio 1 sound card. My problem is that I am not able to voice chat. The system gives error of sound card being half-duplex.

Rohit

Dr Tribune: Half Duplex cards are quite old now. Now majority of cards are full duplex. It is true that for effective voice communication on the Internet, you need to have a full duplex sound card. We have answered a similar query in the last edition of Login…Tribune. So, the best solution to your problem is to change your sound card with a full duplex.

I have bought computer with Intel Pentium-III, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB hard disk with five partitions and Windows ’98 second edition OS. The problem is that whenever I work in any Window applications (Visual studio, Office 97, Front Page), the system hangs by giving fatal exception error and I have to restart the computer. Also it usually displays the message "Illegal operation performed." I have reinstalled Windows two times but it doesn’t solve the problem. Initially the system works properly but later on it hangs usually. When I perform scandisk, it gives error in C drive and also fixes it but after some time the same problem reappears. I have also checked my hard disk for bad sectors, but there is none. Please let me know whether this problem is regarding software or hardware. Could changing RAM solve this problem?

Dr Tribune: Please mention your problem specifically and write back exactly what messages you are getting. The solution to your problem would depend upon the exact problem, as there could be many reasons to these messages.

Through Yahoo! messenger we can make phone calls from our PC to those living in the USA without any extra charges, I want to know is there any other software or site through which we can talk to people living in Australia

— Pooja Soni

Dr Tribune: You can go to http://www.a2zconnect.com for making free PC to phone calls to Australia and New Zealand. However for making free calls through this site you need to have Internet Explorer.

1. I have Pentium III 500 MHz with Window ’98 PC having Yamaha -320 Watt speakers. My speakers have stopped working as no sound comes from them. I have checked all connections inside the CPU and speakers. I found that speakers are producing good sound with stereo system but not with the computer. Please suggest how to solve the problem.

2. I have two partitions of 10 GB hard disk (4 GB and 6 GB). Win ’98 is loaded on my system. I want to load Linux operating system on it. Please tell me how to load another operating system.

— Pankaj

Dr Tribune: The test conducted by you on your stereo system suggests that your PC speakers are OK. Now, you must check out the sound card drivers in your PC. If the sound card driver is removed accidentally or deliberately from your PC, then this kind of problem is likely. Regarding your second query, there are two things, which are important for you to know:

1) Linux operating system is compatible with all versions of Windows and can co-exist with any operating system even in the same partition. However, if you have another partition then free hard disk space of 1.5 GB is sufficient enough.

2) Installing Linux operating system on your hard disk requires little caution and idea about the drivers and versions of your hardware. Because these things would be required while installing Linux and it does not install the necessary driver automatically. If you are an amateur, then it is better that you either consult some book on Linux or seek professional help.

Whenever I play MP 3 files using Winamp or other players, there is a distortion in sound. Is it due to installing more than one players or a hardware problem. I have done all necessary settings that I know.

— Muna Sekhon

Dr Tribune: This problem can normally be associated with either some kind of loose connection or short-circuiting in your PC and electric connection or with improper earth of electric connection. Please make sure none of these things are there and it will solve your problem.
