EDUCATION

GCW annual day
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 11
The state government is laying emphasis on technical and computer education, along with higher studies, in the educational institutions, so that the youth can become self-reliant and self-employed, rather than hankering after jobs.

This was stated by Mr Balbir Singh Miani, Minister of State for Higher Education and Medical Education, Punjab, while presiding over the 58th annual prize distribution function of Government College for Women here last evening. Stressing the need for putting an end to the inequality between the boys and the girls in society, he observed that women had a greater role to play in the creation of a better society. “Only literate and enlightened women can lead the family, and in turn, society and the nation, towards progress and development.”

Mr Miani further said a lot had been done for providing better education and equal opportunities to women but still a lot more remained to be done in this direction. The Punjab Government had taken a lead in giving effect to 33 per cent reservation for women in the electoral field.

During its tenure of four years, the SAD-BJP government, led by Mr Parkash Singh Badal, had taken major initiatives to improve the standard of education and a large number of posts of teachers, lying vacant since long, had been filled. To encourage the teachers who put up good performance, the government would honour such teachers, who produced good results on a regular basis.

He made a special mention of the exemplary discipline and academic achievements of the college and appreciated the principal and the staff. Mr Miani announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for the college from his discretionary funds.

Fifteen students who had excelled in various fields, seven others who had collected significant donations for earthquake victims of Gujarat, 20 members of the college council and 20, with good academic record, received prizes from the minister on the occasion. The Principal of the college, Ms Inderjit Kaur Gill Vashisht, read out the annual report.
