Dr Tribune

Kindly address my following problems:

a) While adding a new account by following the Internet connection wizard, after writing down the incoming and outgoing servers’ addresses, do I put my username and password as provided by the ISP or the password of Yahoo/Hotmail email account? (I have tried both).

b) On clicking the send and receive button, a small window opens: "Logon -pop.mail.yahoo.com. Please enter your username and password for this server". On clicking OK, it shows the following error: There was an error logging onto your mail server. Your password was rejected. Server error 0x800CCC90.

c) In the "Connection" sheet of the Properties of an e-mail account, should I use default Internet explorer settings or should I put a check against the second option? If the answer is latter, should I opt for LAN or my ISP connection?

d) Is it absolutely necessary to add a new identity or they can be configured in the existing identity as well?

— Madhur Gupta

Dr Tribune: For configuring your new Internet account it is important that you read and then proceed carefully. You have written that you correctly write the incoming and outgoing server address. As far as the username and password is concerned, it should be the same, which corresponds to those server addresses. If you have taken the server address of your ISP, you should use the user name and password of that particular account. Similarly, if you have used the server address of Yahoo, then you should use that user name and password.

Regarding your second problem, in the pop-up window, you should write the user name and password of your Yahoo! account and then press OK. As an alternative, you can also set "save password" option in your e-mail account to avoid the popping up of password window, as it will remember the password automatically.

If you are using the dial-up Internet connection, you should use the default settings and should not opt for LAN settings. However, if you are using the computer on LAN, only then you can choose this setting.

If you have one e-mail account to be configured in your e-mail client, you need not add identities then, as your single e-mail account becomes default identity. However, if you wish to add other e-mail accounts like Yahoo! etc., then you will have to add one identity for every account you wish to add.

I have purchased a PC with 20 GB hard disk , 128 MB RAM ,810E motherboard and Windows ’98 . Whenever I start my PC, a folder named program opens automatically. This folder is in the C drive. The problem started when I loaded software named Interquick. Kindly help.

— Rajiv

Dr Tribune: The solution to your problem lies in your start-up folder. Your computer opens program folder, because it exists in your start-up folder. Thus, in order to correct this problem, simply remove this folder from the start-up directory.

I have Intel 3 with 64 MB RAM .I had first installed 2000 professional as an operating system but had problem with it. So I formatted all drives and installed Window ’98. Now my computer cannot display 256 true colour and I am having problem. Please tell me how to solve it.

— Karamdeep Sandhu

Dr Tribune: I think you have not installed the correct driver for your VGA card and you are still using the standard VGA driver in your computer. All you need to do is install the correct driver of your VGA card. If you have built-in VGA card on your motherboard, then you can find the driver on the CD, which comes along with your motherboard CD, else use the CD, you must have got with the VGA card.

I have an assembled Pentium III with 700 MHz, 64 MB RAM, ATX motherboard and 82810 Intel chipset with Windows Me as OS. My problem is that my screen area can get increased up to 1024 x 768 but my friend’s computer screen area can go up to 1600 x 1200. How I can increase my screen area up to this level.

— Gagandeep Singh

Dr Tribune: The size of the screen area depends upon the VGA card you are using. If your VGA card supports higher screen area, then you can get it in your computer. Second factor, which affects the screen size, is the refresh frequency rate. Normally on lower refresh frequency rates you can get higher screen area.

I have a PC at home. It is Celeron 533 MHz, 64 MB RAM, 48 x CD-ROM, operating device is Win ’98. My problem is that when I log on to the Net, its speed is quite good, but sooner it becomes very slow. What should I do?

Rahul

Dr Tribune: The speed of the Internet connection basically depends upon both external and internal factors. Internal factors include computer settings, modem settings, whereas the external settings include line conditions, ISP’s bandwidth etc. Normally if your surfing speed gets slow after a while, you should first try to check some internal features. Reboot your system and start surfing, first of all. You can also clean your disk cache and memory cache in your browser setting. This too will boost the normal surfing speed. Normally memory cache is not cleaned regularly and this may also cause slower speed. Also tune your system properly and keep a good amount of hard disk space free. Still, if you so not find any change, you may then change your ISP.

1. I have configured my Yahoo! account. The problem is that I am able to receive mails through my Yahoo! account configured in Outlook Express but am unable to send mails through it. Please send me the SMTP address of Yahoo! server so that I can send mails through Outlook Express.

2. My other problem is use my PC to see movies. It’s specifications are Pentium Celeron 533 MHz, AT cabinet, Mercury motherboard, 10 GB hard-disk, Windows Me operating system, inbuilt soundcard and display card, 52 x Samsung CD ROM. Which hardware components should I use to improve the clarity. Should I go for display card or any video card. Also tell me the difference between display card, AGP card and video-card.

3. How can I configure my Hotmail account in Outlook Express so that I can send and receive my Hotmail’s mail through Outlook Express. Please tell me the pop and SMTP address of hotmail server.

— Amardeep Singh

Dr Tribune: Often there is a problem in sending the mail through Outlook Express using the Yahoo! account, though it works well for receiving the mails. The SMTP address of Yahoo! is smtp.mail.yahoo.com.

Regarding your second problem, you have not written exactly, what is lacking in the video output. Whether the video is jerky or are the colours bad. Please specify. Also mention the specification of your motherboard. From your letter it appears that you have Intel 810 chipset motherboard. These motherboards have built-in VGA card and thus you do not require any extra card.

For configuring Hotmail account in Outlook Express, add new identity first and then follow the instructions. Choose to use Hotmail account, in the process of configuration instead of the other option for your existing e-mail account. The rest of the procedure is simple and self-explanatory.

I have a hard disk of 3 GB Quantum in my Pentium computer. When I ran scandisk, some bad sectors came. I have two partitions on my hard disk. One is of 2GB and another of 1GB. Primary partition is now full of bad sectors as shown by the format to display message. I tried to recover file allocation but extended disk is totally clean. My problem is: In my hard disk neither fdisk nor format command works on primary partition by using Windows ’98 as well as DOS bootable floppies. I want to use only my extended disk so that instead of using 3GB I use only 1 GB space. How can I make extended partition active? Suggest me any utility for this or other method to solve this problem. Disk Manager has also fail on my hard disk. I have already done low-level formatting of my hard disk but it hangs in the cylinder number. 67 and list of bad sectors are more than 8000.

— Sonu Bansal

Dr Tribune: The best way to proceed in such case is to go for low-level formatting. However, since there are as many as 8, 000 bad sectors in your hard disk, I think that your hard disk is almost finished and the chances are that your extended disk may also get affected sooner or later. Ideally, it is better to go for new hard disk rather than continue with the older one. However, if you wish to use the clean partition of your hard disk, then you must install an operating system in the clean partition as otherwise your system will boot from the primary partition only. At the time of booting, choose the option of booting from the new operating system. This way you will be able to work from your clean partition.

I have the following questions:

1. I would like to know whether the cancelling of scandisk or disk defragmenter when working effects the hard disk in any way, like resulting into bad sectors or file displacement etc.

2. The speakers produce a noise whenever I move my mouse pointer in Win2000. Do I install some application?

3. The HDD’s LED glows for sometime even after safe shut down screen appears in Win ’98.

4. Finally, I encounter disk boot error on starting my PC once in a while though I have double-checked the cables. My config is Azza Intel 810-based MB, Seagate 20 GB HDD, PIII-500 MHz. My OS is Win ’98 and Win2000.

— U. Joshi

Dr Tribune: It is always better to let scandisk or disk defragmenter complete its operation as it will take care of all problems, which might be there in the system. However, if you stop them in between, it will not do any harm to your system. The case of speaker producing a noise could be due to some loose connections. Though you do not need any application for it yet you can try by fixing the mouse cable in your motherboard firmly or by using another mouse. Regarding the disk boot error, please remove floppy disk from your floppy drive before booting the machine. However as a permanent solution, change the boot sequence in your BIOS set-up to C, A instead of A, C. I hope this will solve your problem.
