Fire destroys 35 shops Jammu, March 3 At least 35 shops and some residential houses were gutted in a devastating fire which broke out at Kahra village in Gandoh of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir last night.

3 killed, Rs 6 lakh looted in J&K Srinagar, March 3 Two militants, including a foreign mercenary, were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Lar in the Ganderbal area, near here, yesterday. One AK rifle, one pistol eight grenades and 34 rounds of ammunition were seized from the site of the encounter, the police said. Those killed were identified as Mohammad

Wani, a local militant. Unidentified militants shot dead Ghulam Rasool Magray in his house at Kandi in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, a police spokesman said here today. At least five passengers were injured when an explosive device went off in a civil bus at Kupwara bus stand yesterday. The police said that a consignment of hand-pumps which reached Kupwara at about 3 pm yesterday containing some explosive caused the explosion. Unidentified gunmen looted an amount of Rs 6 lakh from State Cooperative Bank at Sr Gunj here this afternoon. The police has registered a case and started investigations. The police and security forces recovered two AK magazines, 315 AK rounds, 13 RPG rockets, 22 hand grenades, 3.5 kgs of explosive from the Lolab area of Kupwara district during a search operation. In another operation, the police seized one AK 56 rifle alongwith magazines from an abandoned house at Yangoora Kherbavani near here. A spokesman of the Border Security Force (BSF) here today claimed that a militant of
Al-Barq outfit, Mohammad Iqbal Sheikh surrendered before the security forces at Kupwara yesterday. The spokesman claimed that he was motivated by some functionaries of
Al-Barq outfit last year, and was sent to PoK in June for training. He returned in July last year after the training and was being directed and pressurised to take part in subversive activities and act against the security forces. Fed up with the life of a militant, he, according to the spokesman, surrendered before the DIG BSF, Kupwara and handed over one AK 54 rifle, two magazines and 60 rounds of AK 56 rifle, among other arms. Fourteen persons were wounded when militants made an abortive attempt to target a police party in Kulgam town in South Kashmir by detonating a grenade, the police said. They said militants threw a grenade towards a team of Special Operations Group
(SOG) of the local police near the Kulgam bus stand. The grenade missed the target and exploded on the road, injuring 14 pedestrians. This is the second such incident in the same area during the past three days. On February 28, in a grenade attack, four SOG personnel and a CRPF jawan were injured. Meanwhile, Lieut-Gen Vijay Oberoi, Vice-Chief of the Army Staff, arrived in Udhampur. At the headquarters of the Northern Command, he was presented a detailed briefing and assessment of the current situation along the Line of Control and in the terrorist-infested hinterland of Jammu and Kashmir after the implementation of Non-initiation of Combat Operations (NICO). He had a detailed discussion with the Army commander on various other issues of contemporary operational significance and the strategy of effectively dealing with the current situation. |
3 policemen missing, feared killed Jammu, March 3 A police official said here that the policemen would be cremated with full state honours. Ex gratia and other relief would be given to next of the kin as per the government rules. Three of the seriously injured policemen, admitted to Government Medical College Hospital here, were stated to be out of danger. The police said 15 bodies had been identified so far. One body could not be recognised due to severe injuries on the face. The missing policemen could be dead, the police said. The deceased included a Special Police Officer and a medical assistant. Sixteen policemen were killed when militants attacked their vehicle from both sides of the road at a bridge in Gambhir Mughla with grenades, rockets and automatic weapons. The 28-strong police party was returning to the Manjakot police station in Rajouri from Kanabal forest after investigating into the killings of two civilians by the militants on Thursday night. The Army had cordoned off the area and a massive manhunt had been launched, the police said. The attack took place near an Army camp, a BSF battalion was also camping nearby. Id shoppers throng markets Srinagar, March 3 Over the past few days, a heavy rush of consumers has been witnessed in the marketplaces, with the confectioners, bakery dealers, vegetable vendors and dealers in other essential commodities as also the ready-made garments putting up special stalls to meet the demand. The hustle and bustle follows the festivities related with sending off of the Haj pilgrims from the valley last month. The government has made elaborate arrangements for the smooth supply of essential commodities to the people in the valley on the occasion. Checking squads have been constituted to control the quality and prices of the essential commodities in the Capital. A meeting to review the arrangements held here yesterday was presided over by the Works Minister, Mr Ali Mohammad
Sagar. The meeting expressed satisfaction over the availability of essentials and their prices. Cooking gas and kerosene were in sufficient stock and generally there was no complaint of scarcity, the meeting was informed. The Animal Husbandry and Sheep Husbandry Departments have opened outlets for the sale of poultry birds and sacrificial sheep in the valley. The 21 poultry sale centres opened across the valley include seven in Srinagar district, including two mobile sale centres, five in Anantnag and two each in
Baramulla, Kupwara, Pulwama and Budgam districts. The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, who also attended the meeting, said that the LPG and poultry dealers have announced a concession of Rs 2 on an LPG cylinder and per kg of poultry meat on the occasion. The Food and Supplies Department would provide additional 1 kg of sugar and five litres of kerosene to consumers on each ration card. He said special teams have been formed to check the entry of dead sheep and poultry into the city. The market checking and quality control squads have also been fanned out to ensure that people did not face any inconvenience. The Srinagar Municipality, he said, had seized 500 dead poultry birds and two truckloads of edible oil without the manufacturing date at
Pandrethan. The Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department would press into service 70 water tankers in water scarcity areas of the valley. The department has installed 400 temporary water posts at various shrines and mosques in Srinagar city where big Id congregations will be held. These include
Hazratbal, Jamia Masjit and Asaar-e-Sharief Soura. Besides, 14 water tankers, including six mobile water tankers, are available with the department to meet any crisis. Meanwhile, according to a spokesman of the Anjuman-i-Auqaf, management of the Jamia Masjid here, the main Id prayers would be offered at the Jamia Masjid. He said that this decision had been taken in view of the bad weather conditions, adding that all arrangements for the devout were being made. |
Militants chop off ears of two Rajouri, March 3 The police said 15 militants barged into the house of Beli Ram in
Bambal, dragged him out of his house and chopped off his right ear. They took away Rs 10,000 in cash and two .12 bore guns. The same group of militants chopped off the left ear of Suraj Ram. A day earlier another group of militants had killed a panch and a government employee in Gambhir Moghla village. |

SC order on Dal Lake New Delhi, March 3 A Division Bench comprising Mr Justice G.B. Pattanaik and Mr Justice U.C. Banerjee issued the direction during the preliminary hearing of the petition filed by Syed Mujtaba Hussain. The judges also gave notices to the state government and other authorities associated with the upkeep of the lake which is a major tourist attraction. They granted two weeks’ time to the petitioner to file their reply after the receipt of responses from the Centre, state government and other respondents. |
