HERBS AND HEALTH
Bhringraj – the herbal hair tonic
Dr. R. Vatsyayan

BhringraJ is prominent among the few herbs chosen by Ayurveda for hair care. It is a small, six-inch to one foot tall erect and annual plant, which is found throughout the Indian subcontinent, more commonly in the wet land. Depending upon the colour of its flower, ancient Ayurved practitioners described it as being of three types — white, yellow and blue. Practically, only the first two varieties are found, as blue Bhringraj is considered to be a transformation of the white one in its full ripe stage. The whole plant (panchang) has medicinal properties.

Bhringraj has been described as katu and tikta ( bitter and pungent ) in taste and light, dry and hot in effect. It pacifies kapha and vata. The chemical composition of Bhringraj consists of resin in high quantity and an alkaloid known as ecliptine. Its leaves are known to be richer in protein than any other green vegetable .

Ayurvedic texts have described Bhringraj as keshya which means beneficial for hair. Lesser known but equally effective use of this herb is in liver disease. Bhringraj is a promising herb which protects the liver from various toxic substances and its use is indicated in a number of hepatic disorders such as jaundice and cirrhosis . It is also used in a number of other complaints such as diseases of the skin and the eye, aneamia and hyperacidity. It also has anti-inflammatory and rasayan effect on the body.

Use of oils processed with bhringraj has been known since time immemorial to prevent hair loss, dandruff and premature graying of hair . These oils are therefore found occupying an important place in the hair care kit in every Indian home. The famous Bhringraj Kesh Tel can be made in home by processing 2 kg of fresh bhringraj juice in 8 kg of sesame oil.

A well-known classic ayurvedic medicine, Sootshekhar Rasa, is also prepared by using the juice of bhringraj . It is a highly effective remedy of acute and chronic hyperacidity and peptic ulcer. The use of juice-snuff after mixing it with milk is also useful in migraine. It can also be applied in a number of skin diseases and leucoderma.

As Ayurveda has described Bhringraj as restorative and rejuvenator, regular use of 10 ml of Bhringraj juice once a day is recommended to keep the body fit and active.
