Dream theme

Some home-truths!
By Vinaya Katoch Manhas

HOME and family in a culture like ours carry a lot of significance for every individual. It also carries an equal weightage in dreams. For a person to dream that he goes home and finds everything cheerful and comfortable, denotes harmony in family life and satisfactory results in business. To see your old home in a dilapidated state, warns you of the sickness of a relative. But if, in your dreams, you visit your old home and it is in good condition then you will have good news to rejoice over.

As per Indian mythology, if you see a pillar of your house broken then it spells ill-will for the old people of the family. However, if you see your house being destroyed in front of you then it spells ill for your complete family. If you dream that your house is getting burned and, in the process, itself you wake up then you shall gain in both wealth and fame. If the person dreams that he is making a house, such a dream would predict wise changes in present affairs. If, in your dreams, you see that you own an elegant house then you shall soon have to leave your home for a better one, and fortune shall be kind to you. If you dream that you are lost and unable to find your home then uncertainty shall prevail among your relationships, making you lose. If you shift house in your dreams, then hurried tidings and hasty journeys await you.

Psychologically, a house represents security, which helps us to integrate our own primary traits with learnt behaviour. The human being has certain basic needs such as shelter, warmth and nourishment. The parental home can signify all these things. To dream of being at home signifies a return to the basic standards we learnt as a child. The different rooms and parts of the house in dreams indicate the various aspects of ones personality.

The attic is related to the past experiences and old memories. It also helps in highlighting family patterns of behaviour and attitudes which have been handed down. The basement represents the subconscious and those things that we may have suppressed through an inability to handle them. A basement can also highlight the power that is available to us, provided we are willing to make use of it. Our attitude to personal cleanliness and our most private thoughts and actions can be shown as the bathroom or the toilet. The bedroom portrays a place of safety where we can relax and be as sensual as we wish. The hallway is illustrative of how we relate to other people.

Thus, a house is a place where we can be ourselves without fear or reprisal. A man of 37 often had dreamt of a beautiful cottage on a hillock with greenery all around and a scenic beauty surrounding it. It had a very large hall and several rooms. Although it seems more a dream, that symbolises wish fulfilment, it definitely portrays the person to social, because of the stress on the largeness of the hall. It also portrays that this man is the type who loves to show the world what he has and feels pride in it. Even such a simple dream could portray inner aspects to your personality.
