Jan 12 — The Chief Minister of Punjab has agreed to the proposal of the city’s traffic police to introduce a single window system for the settlement of challans made by the traffic police. The purpose of the drive against the violators of traffic rules was to educate them and not to collect money or to harass them by challaning them. No targets has been fixed as such, said Mr Sukhdev Singh Bhatti, SP (traffic). He was addressing the members of the Knitwear Club yesterday at the circuit house.
Mr Vinod Thapar, president of the club, drew attention of Mr Bhatti towards the nuisance created by the autorickshaws who were mixing kerosene oil with petrol and then exhaust highly polluting and dangerous gases. The problem created by the indiscipline of local buses was disturbing the traffic on the main roads of the city.
Mr Bhatti agreed that the traffic problem was very serious and needed immediate checks. He emphasised that the solution lied simply in applying common sense. It was the public who had to help itself by understanding their responsibility and prevent inconvenience to fellow commuters by maintaining discipline on the road.
Mr Bhatti also agreed that there were some bad elements in traffic wing too who were being identified and eliminated. The steps were being taken by traffic wing that included lane system for autorickshaws and bus ways for buses. He said that no leniency would be allowed to polluting autorickshaws and it shall be ensured that buses run only in the bus ways.
