What do your doodles suggest?
By Anita Tayal

WHAT did you usually do when you had to sit through your teacher’s boring lecture? Obviously, you sat scribbling something on the back page of your notebook. Studies have revealed that every doodle has a meaning. It may be just a zig-zag of lines, but even that tells something about your nature and personality. A doodle is what you scribble aimlessly on a paper, it could be anything. This activity carried out by you reflects your mental state.

We all draw strange figures while twiddling our thumbs. It may be on the corner of a newspaper, on blackboard, on walls or even on a canteen table while sipping a cup of coffee. Furthermore, you may be drawing with a pen, pencil, chalk, or it may be just your finger moving a drop of water on the dining table. Now the question is: what have you doodled and what does it imply?

You need to check the position of the doodle on the page. Experts say if your mute picture is in the middle of the paper then you are an extrovert who does not like to be ignored and likes to be the centre of attraction. However, a right-sided doodle may reveal your interest in the future. It shows that you are ambitious and want to achieve your goal at a fast pace. A left-sided doodle indicates that you want to stick to your past. Doodles drawn at the top show your over-enthusiasm towards life, while the scribble at the bottom of a page, depicts a negative attitude. So, the place where you draw your doodle is as important as what you draw.

Retracing shows the degree of obligation on your part; the shading in your figures indicates a depressing phase. Pressing your pencil hard, indicates an intrepid nature; while a light sketch depicts a flexible and sensitive attitude. An even pressure indicates a serene and balanced personality. To add to this dictionary, bird doodles reflect your imaginative and intellectual power, whereas flowers depict a soothing and affectionate nature. A circle doodler is a flexible but rather lazy individual. A number of squares with a small space in between indicate that it has been drawn by a solid personality in whose life there are little surprises. While doodling noughts and crosses, your aim is to win — whatever the game may be.

Every doodle gives an insight into the doodler’s nature and personality. It is quite possible that you doodle when you are in a depressed mood — you may have argued with somebody or someone may have humiliated you. You may even doodle in a joyous mood. Any psychological fear can also make you pick up a pen and indulge in this intrusive work.

So, the next time you find yourself poised with a writing instrument, go about it but keep it safe, and at any later moment, think about it. What was your mental state — whether you were under stress, or in a happy mood— while you were doodling? These are some queries you must ask yourself. An appropriate answer will enable you to become a better person and manipulate any task effectively
