Malwa Khalsa girls bag top 5 positions

LUDHIANA, Dec 13 — Students of Malwa Central College of Education for Women have secured top five positions in the Master of Education examination conducted by Panjab University in April this year.

Ramandeep Kaur, who obtained 417 marks out of 600, stood first while Rupinder Kaur secured second position by securing 415 marks. Gurpreet Kaur and Shveta together secured fourth rank with 408 marks and Jatinder Kaur got fifth position with 406 marks. The Principal, Dr Ravinder Kaur, congratulated the students on their achievement.

Lecture on mental health

A lecture on ‘Mental health — its promotion in class rooms’ by Dr Shangara Singh, Dean, Board of Studies in Education, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, was organised at Malwa Central College of Education for Women, here today. He stressed upon equating mental health with physical health. He elaborated the need for awareness regarding mental health in our country.

Jagriti wins declamation contest

LUDHIANA, Dec 13 — An inter-house Hindi declamation contest was organised by the Senior Humanities Forum of Kundan Vidya Mandir, city branch, here today.

Three participants from classes VI to VIII represented each of the three houses. The students had to choose from 12 topics. Jagriti Sharma of Class VIII who spoke on Bal mazdoori — Desh ke liye abhishaap stood first. She highlighted the fact that a collective effort was required to put an end to the problem of child labour. She said that children below 14 were being employed at homes and factories and were being underpaid.

Tahseen Abbas of Class VIII who spoke on the topic Kaash mein shiksha mantri hoti was declared second. Anish of Class VI whose topic was Shram se miti sona ugle was bracketed third with Urvashi Pahwa of Class VIII who again chose the topic on Bal mazdoori.

Tagore House was declared first, followed by Gandhi House and Nehru House. Judges on the occasion were Ms N. Walia, Ms Suman Jain and Ms Shuchi, all teachers in the school. The declamation was coordinated by Ms Vibha Sharma, in charge, Senior Humanities Forum. Ms N. Mannan, Headmistress of the school, appreciated the efforts of the students and gave away prizes.

Amarjot wins declamation contest

LUDHIANA, Dec 13 — Thirtyeight students from 19 schools of the city participated in a declamation contest, organised at Everest Public Senior Secondary School, Moti Nagar, here today.

Students of classes VII and VIII who participated had to speak in Hindi or Punjabi. The first prize was clinched by Amarjot Kaur of Guru Nanak Public School who spoke on the topic Samay jo Ishwar ka diya hua hai. Second prize went to Shama of Atam Public Senior Secondary School. Anjali Mittal of Everest Public Senior Secondary School was bracketed third with Suneeta Sadana of Guru Nanak Public School.

Consolation prizes were given to Amandeep Kaur of Central Model High School, Sharandeep Kaur of Everest Public Senior Secondary School, Satvinder Singh of Guru Harkrishan Public School and Ranjit Kaur of Government Senior Secondary School, Dhandran.

Mr Ashutosh Sharma, Assistant General Manager of the zonal office of State Bank of India, was the chief guest. Mr Shiv Singh, former Chairman, Improvement Trust, and Ms Asha Sharma, Principal of the school, gave away prizes to the students. Mr Rajinder Sharma, Director of the school, said that the declamation was organised annually in the memory of founder of the school, Mr Dina Nath Sharma.

Course for food scientists

LUDHIANA, Dec 13 — In order to meet the challenges of World Trade Organisation in the context of globalisation of the market the scientists and the industry engaged in food processing have to join hands for fulfilling their respective objectives. The responsibility for giving technology for processing and maintaining the quality of food rests with the scientists while the food industry has to apply this technology in order to provide good quality packaged food.’’

These views were expressed by Dr M.S. Bajwa, Director of Research while inaugurating the ICAR-sponsored training course for food scientists on “Food Processing and Industry Linkages.” The course is organised jointly by the Department of Food Science Technology and Department of Foods and Nutrition of Punjab Agricultural University.

Dr Mrs S. Mann, Dean, College of Home Science and course Director said the university teachers from the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Gujarat are participating in this 10 days training course. The objective of the course is to give advance training to the teachers so that they may make the teaching self-employment oriented in their respective institutions.
