Programme on medical emergencies from Dec 16

CHANDIGARH, Dec 13 — To keep pace with rapid advancement in the field of medicine, a national level continuing medical education (CME) programme on medical emergencies is being organised by the Western Command Hospital, Chandimandir on December 16 and 17.

According to a statement issued here today, the highlight of the CME will be a guest symposium on acute pancreatitis, besides guest lectures on thrombotic disorders at high altitude, cerebral malaria, diabetic emergencies, component transfusions, leukemia, head and eye injuries and the salvage of mutilated hand.

Specialists belonging to various disciplines from the armed forces as well as civilian institutions will share their experiences in dealing with emergencies in their respective fields.

The programme will be inaugurated by the GOC-in-C Western Command, Lt Gen Surjit Singh. A professional journal will be released by the Chief of Staff, Western Command, Lt Gen H.R.S. Mann.

City girl aims for gold medal

CHANDIGARH, Dec 13 — “I will win a gold medal for my country,” says Gurpreet Kaur of Chandigarh, who will make her debut for the Indian team at the sixth Asian junior rowing meet beginning here tomorrrow. She will take part in the single scull event.

A student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, she is a swimmer of repute. She took to rowing only an year back. Indian team captain Dalbir Singh, an Arjuna awardee, said Indians would take part in the single scull, double scull and coxless fours events. The manager, Prabhjeev Singh, said the team was in good form. He added that only oarsmen from India and Hong Kong would use their own boats.

Mr T.C. Gupta, president of the Chandigarh Rowing Association and secretary-general of the organising committee, said it was nice to see that participants had come in good numbers. The meet would be a stepping stone for promising rowers, he added.

Though the Chinese were the favourites in most of the events, the Koreans and the Japanese would be a force to reckon with. Ms Chou Chun Ying, an international umpire and official with the Chinese Taipei team, said they had brought 17 rowers, out of which 16 were new faces. The coach, Lin Yung-Lung, complained that the boats were C-class boats while they had asked for A-class boats.

Colonel C.P. Singh Deo, secretary-general of the Rowing Federation of India, said the entry forms mentioned that each country was required to bring its own boats. He added that boats would not be a hindrance for the performance of those who had potential. He claimed that the academy planned here would popularise rowing in this part of the country.

City schools prove good hosts

CHANDIGARH, Dec 13 — Two roller skating events — the National Schools Games and the CBSE National Skating meet held during the past fortnight at Panchkula and Chandigarh have shown that schools can be good hosts.

It began with the first CBSE meet which was hosted by Kailash Bahl DAV Centenary School from November 30 to December 2. According to Ms Madhu Bahl, Principal, they began preparing for the championship about three months ago and the big challenge was to contact all the affiliated schools in India. They wrote first of all to schools in the remote areas, then to schools in the North. The CBSE had given them the option to select the schools and asked them to arrange board, lodging and transport for the competitors.

The chief guest, Lt-Gen JFR Jacob (retd), Governor of Punjab, praised the way the event was organised. Mr Chain Singh, coach of the Madhya Pradesh team, said that they had spent four comfortable days. Ms Bahl said that the chief guest on the final day, Mr Subramanium, Director Academics, had assured them that next year more events will be added to the competition.

Similary, the 46th National School Games, were organised by Hansraj Public School, Panchkula, in co-ordination with the Haryana Education Department. The School Games Federation of India had given the nod for the skating events to be held in Haryana. Since Hansraj School, a pioneer in skating, had the infrastructure, the events were held there.

Ms Rajni Thareja, Principal of HPS, said that they got the confirmation four months ago, but since all the three events, roller hockey, artistic and speed skating for all age groups, were to be held, they were worried. But with the support of the Haryana Education Department, they were able to hold this event from December 5 to 9. The Chief Minister of Haryana, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, and the Education Minister, Mr Bahadur Singh, watched the events for two hours. The speed events were held at the skating rink of Blue Bird School.

Mr Mangat Dhani, Founder President of the Roller Skating Federation of India, who came as a technical official said that at all the three schools — KB DAV, Hansraj and Blue Bird — the technical officials faced no problem.

DAV-10 win PU athletics meet

CHANDIGARH, Dec 13 — The DAV College, won the Panjab University Athletics Championship for men by gathering 45 points. The GGS DAV Centenary College of Jalalabad and the Sector 26 SGGS College won the second and third positions, respectively.

Sarabjit Singh of Khalsa College, Garhdiwala; Sunil Yadav of the GGD SD College, Chandigarh; and Puran Chand of the SGGS College, Chandigarh, were declared the best athletes.

The GGN Khalsa College of Education, Gurusar Sadhar, won the PU Athletics Championship in the category of evening and education colleges.

Dr P.C. Kashyap, Regional Director, of the SAI (Chandigarh), gave away the prizes.

Boxing body chief
Mr J.R. Kundal, IAS and Punjab Secretary for Public Health, was today unanimously elected the new President of the Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association at a meeting of the body held here today. The other office-bearers remain unchanged. Mr Inder Pal Singh attended the meeting as an observer appointed by the Chandigarh Sports Council.

It was also decided to hold the 24th Chandigarh State Senior Boxing Championship on January 1 and 2, 2001, and the 8th A.K. Misra Memorial Boxing Championship from January 23 to 27 here.

11.86 lakh for relaying sewerage in grain market

CHANDIGARH, Dec 13 — The first meeting of the newly-elected directors of the UT Market Committee was held after a gap of nearly four years and matters relating to various welfare measures besides methods to detect the evasion of market fee by traders and farmers were discussed.

The meeting was presided over by the chairman, Mr Kesar Singh and attended by Mr Kuldeep Singh Kajheri, vice chairman, Mr Bhupinder Singh Badheri, Mr Gurdeep Singh Attawa, Mr Gurdev Singh, Mr Des Raj, Mr R V Bhatti and Mr Rattan Chand, all directors. Mr Gyanesh Bharti, SDM, a member appointed by the Administration on the board could not attend the meeting while Mr D.S. Baloria acted as the secretary.

The 23 point agenda was dominated by the need for having a rest house-cum-canteen for farmers. At present they were at the mercy of the commission agents who provided them whatever space they could spare and often farmers could be seen huddled in the open facing the vagaries of weather. There was unanimity among those present that construction should be taken up at the earliest.

The members also cleared Rs 11. 86 lakh for the relaying of sewer system of the grain and vegetable market. This was done keeping in view the flooding of the market which is a chronic problem during monsoon. A cheque for the same was deposited with the municipal corporation later.

Besides this, approval was also granted for the purchase of a compactor vehicle for clearing garbage in the markets.

Taking a humanitarian view of the increasing number of thresher victims in the local villages, the members also decided to grant Rs 50,000 as compensation to the victims who regularly lose their limbs in accidents. It was also decided to purchase storage bins and tarpaulins worth Rs 10 lakh for farmers. More pesticides are also to be procured.

The construction of a shed for the apple, onion and potato buyers and sellers also got the nod of the members. At present the produce is sold in the open and get damaged during inclement weather.

Besides this, the agenda items clearing the rewiring of the existing vegetable shed, road maintenance, purchase of office furniture, installation of telephones in the offices of the chairman and vice chairman, appointment of 10 sweepers and one driver on contract, winter uniform to staff and clearing all pending bills was also passed.

Mr Badheri demanded that all office work should be done in Punjabi since farmers spoke and could read the language was also approved. All items would now be sent to the Secretary, UT Mandi Board, for approval.

Meanwhile four sub committees - purchase, administrative, tender and checking — were constituted for smooth functioning of the market committee.

Mr Bhupinder Singh Badheri, Mr Kuldeep Singh and Mr Gurdeep Singh are members of the checking committee which would check books of traders and carry out raids to detect fee evasion. They are also members of the administration committee.

Mr O.P. Chawla, Mr Gurdeep Singh and Mr Gurdev Singh are the members of the purchase committee.

Mr O.P. Chawla, Mr Gurdev Singh and Mr Kuldeep Singh are the members of the tender committee.
