Bits & Bytes

Data encoding: Data encoding refers to the method by which a modem encodes digital data onto an analog signal for transmission to a remote modem to which it is connected via the PSTN.

Bandwidth: Bandwidth basically refers to (1) The difference, expressed in hertz, between the highest and the lowest frequencies of a range of frequencies. (2) In asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), the capacity of a virtual channel, expressed in terms of peak cell rate (PCR), sustainable cell rate (SCR), and maximum burst size (MBS). (3) A measure of the capacity of a communication transport medium (such as a TV cable) to convey data.

Batch file: Batch files mean a file containing data that is to be processed unattended.

Analog transmission:
Analog transmission refers to the current method of voice transmission used in telephone systems. Analog converts voice to electronic signals and amplifies them, allowing the signals to be sent over long distances.

K56Flex : This is term related to modems and it is the proprietary 56K technology developed by Rockwell and Lucent Technologies.

Baud: Baud is a term related to data transfer speed and in asynchronous transmission, baud is the unit of modulation rate corresponding to one unit interval per second; that is, if the duration of the unit interval is 20 milliseconds, the modulation rate is 50 baud.

B2C: B2C refers to business-to-consumer e-commerce; marketing to consumers over the Internet.

Access latency: Maximum time that a port will take to either successfully transmit a packet or discard it as measured from the time the packet is presented to the MAC for transmission.
