Children guarded against hepatitis-B

LUDHIANA, Nov 27 — All social-service organisations should hold free polio vaccination camps to help eradicating the disease, an eminent social worker, Dr Tarlochan Singh, said here yesterday after inaugurating a hepatitis-B vaccination camp. The camp was organised by the Rotaract Club of the GGN Khalsa College in the free dispensary run by the Ramgharia Sewa Society of Ram Nagar.

The head of the dispensary, Dr G.S. Ubhi, said newborns and children up to the age of 15 were given the vaccine at Rs 70 each. Those above the age of 15 were charged Rs 135 each for the vaccine. He said the next phase of the camp would be held on December 24.

Dr Sanjit Singh Grewal, Dr Charanjit Kaur Channy and Dr Dalwinder Singh administered the vaccines.

The organisers of the camp included Mr Sukhdev Singh Birdi, President of the Ramgarhia Sewa Society, Mr Mohinder Singh Rooprai, Mr Gurdial Singh Khalsa, Mr Sadhu Singh Dhanjal, Mr Ravinder Singh Matharoo, Mr Avtar Singh Bhanwra, Mr Jarnail Singh Prince, Mr Kartar Singh Birdi and the President of the Rotaract Club, Mr Dalbir Singh Makkar.

Training in PAU for IAS, PCS probationers

LUDHIANA, Nov, 27 — The Department of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, organised a training course for the IAS and PCS probationers in order to acquaint these officers with the latest developments in agriculture and allied activities. The training programme was designed keeping in view the state government policy to provide a second push to agriculture.

While interacting with the officers, Dr K.S. Aulakh, Pro-Vice- Chancellor, PAU called for greater allocation of funds for the intensification of research on export oriented crops like Basmati rice, durum wheat, vegetables, flowers, fruits, Livestock products. He also stressed the need for development of complete package consisting of production, grading, processing, packaging, marketing, and transportation of farming produce. He also called for special emphasis on imparting training and diversified farming enterprise like bee-keeping, mushroom-culture, dairy farming and fish farming.

Dr J.S. Kolar, Director of extension Education, PAU, highlighted the importance of linkage between research, extension and administration in order to provide need-based guidance and support to the farmers. Dr G.S. Momi, Head, Department of Extension Education, said eight officers were imparted this training for a period of three days.
