CORPORATION BEAT
PEC gets 1.6 lakh for field study on water augmentation
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 27 — The Water Supply and Sewerage Disposal Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC), in its meeting held today, sanctioned Rs 1.60 lakhs to the Punjab Engineering College ( PEC) for conducting a field study with regard to the water supply augmentation scheme of bringing water from Gangowal (Punjab) to the city by gravity. The college had recently submitted its feasibility report, thereby giving its nod to the project.

Ms Ranjana Shahi, the chairperson of the committee, said the implementation of the project would serve as a long-term solution to the rising water needs of the city and there would be no water shortage even during summer months. She pointed out that the current shortage of water in the city was due to lack of far-sightedness on the part of the Administration. Had they thought of some solution to augment the water supply in view of the increased demand few years back, the MC would not be grappling with water shortage problems today, she added. The project would also ensure uninterrupted supply even in case of power failure, she added.

The members deliberated on the issue of providing a separate water supply grid for Industrial Area-I, proposed to come up at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore. The industrial workers in the area had been demanding day-time water supply along with augmentation of the existing supply, since the supply was suspended at 9 am and was resumed at 6 pm.

The members observed that if the authorities provided these workers with a separate water supply grid to ensure uninterrupted supply during the day, they would also have to pay the revised water tariff, fixed separately for them. They would have to compensate the authorities for the amount incurred by them in the construction of underground reservoir, pump house, pumping machinery and other allied works for this area. The water supply for this grid would be received from the existing tubewells in the area as well as some additional tubewells, to be installed later. This was likely to ensure continous supply of water from 6 am to 9 pm.

The committee sanctioned Rs 4.52 lakh for purchasing a new Gypsy in lieu of the condemned Gypsy under the charge of Executive Engineer, Public Health, division 1. The members also sanctioned Rs 1.75 lakh to instal boosters to improve water supply to the MC building in Sector 17. Besides this, Rs 60,000 were sanctioned for storm water drainage in the parking area of Sector 35 market near the kerosene pump.

The item pertaining to the construction of a public toilet block along with public health services and electric instalments in Sector 41-D was deferred and the officials were asked to either explore sponsorships or make available the statement of funds for the work by the next meeting. The issue of putting pump and boosters in Sectors 47-C and 47-D at an estimated cost of Rs 12.81lakh and Rs 5.59 lakh, respectively, would also be taken up at the next meeting, with revised estimates.

The purchase of eight electronic cash register machines for the collection of cash at various collection centres was also cancelled, with the members proposing the computerisation of these centres. They santioned Rs 6.04 lakh for providing box-type road gullies on the V3 roads dividing Sectors 46-47, 31-32; 29-30 and 27-28. The item pertaining to providing storm water drainage and road gulllies on the circular road in Burail would be taken up at the next meeting as the officials had been asked to come up with the required details.
