—Rajesh Sethi It appears that you have very limited space on your hard disk. Please try to keep atleast 20 percent of your hard disk free. Also run scan disk followed by disk defrag from time to time. This will reduce the chances of errors like the one mentioned by you. Please tell me if it is necessary to have an air conditioner in a room where a computer is to be installed? —Rajeev Having an air conditioner in the room with the computer is a good idea, but it is not essential to have an air conditioner. It is a misconception that without the AC a computer would not work. All you have to do it protect a PC from direct heat, humidity, dust etc. I have an assembled Celeron 433 MHz PC with 32MB RAM and a 8.4GB HDD running on Windows 98. At times my computer stops responding when I am downloading files from the net. I am left with no choice but to use Ctrl+Alt+Del to end task whereby I lose downloaded data. Secondly, while trying to log to an ISP say Glide or VSNL, a message is displayed that says "the modem is unable to detect dial tone" or "your modem is being run by another program, shut the other program and try to connect again." This happens even when phone lines are properly secured and no other program is running. What should this happen? —Dr Rahul Bhargava Normally, the hanging problem is very difficult to pinpoint, as it could be due to so many factors like hardware problem, over clocking of the CPU, failure of the CPU fan, etc. However, ensure that you do not have too many games, freeware, screensavers, fonts, drivers, etc. loaded onto your system. Some of these could clash causing the system to hang up. Second, run scandisk and Defrag regularly. Also regularly delete the temp files in temp directory and free up cache memory using the features of your browser. Your second problem could be because either you have not disable the "detect dial tone feature" or your dial up networking connection is not disconnected properly. Rebooting the system can help. I find the Login… Tribune a very useful and like it very much. I own a Cyrix 300 MMX computer with 16 MB RAM, 2.1 GB HDD and a Motorola internal 55.6 kbps voice modem. I have Windows98 is installed on my system, I am finding it hard to configure the modem as the modem configuration wizard does not show the COM 3 or 4. What should I do? — Sandeep We have discussed modem configuration in detail earlier. Since the modem has already been installed, first remove it from system>device manager>modem. Now go to add and remove hardware and look for new hardware. A PCI card would be detected. Instead of letting it look for drivers chose manual driver installation. Insert the driver disk that came with the modem and click on have disk option. Select the location and the remaining procedure will be taken care by Windows itself. Happy browsing.
First of all I’ll like to congratulate you on the success of the Login…Tribune. It is the best thing to have happened to the Net Savvy people. How does one find out the POP3 mail addresses and SMTP addresses of various free e-mail accounts available on the net? I have e-mail id’s on Netaddress and AOL, kindly let me know the POP and SMTP addresses of these servers. 2. Whenever I try to download any thing from the net, I receive a message saying "the current settings on your computer does not permit this software to be loaded". How can I overcome this problem? —Gurloveleen Singh We are thankful for your appreciation of our work. Regarding your first problem, normally POP and SMTP services are paid services. For example only ISP’s like Satyam, Glide, VSNL etc, give their pop and SMPT addresses. Netaddress provides POP and SMPT operations as part of its premium service and not the free service. However, you can use software like @nymail, mentioned by us in the past, for using any web-based mail in on e-mail client, which includes Netaddress also. It is a very easy to use software and gives you the option of managing all your email accounts in one software and also to check all accounts almost instantly without going to their respective sites. Regarding your second problem, it
appears that your Internet browser is set at the highest level of
security. So, try to bring down the security level to medium and then
try again. |
