MC panel sanctions 2 more apni mandis
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 20 — The Apni Mandi Committee of the MC which met here today has sanctioned the setting up of two more apni mandis for the benefit of residents of Sector 38 and the Housing Board Complex, Mani Majra. The two will be formally inaugurated within a week or two.

Giving this information, Mr Kanhya Lal, chairman of the committee said that these mandis would be held on every Monday in the area between Sector 38 A and D, and the open space near the Housing Board Complex, Mani Majra.

The Sector 15 Apni Mandi would now be permanently held at its original venue every Wednesday as the committee members have not approved the proposal of putting up railing around the mandi. According to Mr Lal, the entire ground has been levelled for a permanent venue and putting railings would only have posed problems in holding the mandi there.

The members also decided that the parking area in front of the Sector 41-D market would now onwards be made available for scooter market every Sunday. The market was till now being held on the V-3 road dividing Sectors 40 and 41, much to the inconvenience of the residents of these areas.

The committee also proposed that Inspectors who work on Sundays, to challan the violators of car and scooter bazaars should be given an additional allowance of Rs 200 per month for working on a holiday. The matter has been referred to the F and CC meeting and the House for approval. Such a step would only help them to discharge their duties more effectively. Mr Lal pointed out that the MC has already started earning a monthly income of Rs 15,000 per month by imposing a car fee of Rs 500 per day from those who hold car bazars. The income which will accrue from the scooter markets is yet to be assessed.

The item pertaining to the setting up of day markets and whether the day market phari wallahs and apni mandi vendors should sit together or separately will be taken up during the next meeting.
