They win ‘despite the challenge’
From A Correspondent

LUDHIANA, Nov 4 — Nirdosh is a special institute for mentally challenged children run by the Inner Wheel Club of Ludhiana. Its students gave an excellent performance in the third Special Olympics for mentally challenged children that was held in Hoshiarpur past week. In all, 12 schools of different districts in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh participated in the meet. About 300 children got a chance to prove that they were physically strong in spite of being mentally challenged.

Students of Nirdosh bagged 16 gold medals, besides a silver and a bronze. They won 46 more medals for getting fourth, fifth and sixth positions in various events. Members of the team were happy and so was their Principal and coach, Mr Suran Singh.

Though it was difficult for all players to speak, they wanted to talk about their achievements.

A 21-year-old member of the team, Paramjit, won a gold medal each in the 200 m and the 400 m races. Though he did not speak, his eyes expressed his joy and the smile never left his face. He has been trained to make candles and will help his family in running a shop. The double victory in the meet has doubled his confidence as well.

Varun, Arjun and Harpreet wanted to be the first ones to talk about their success. Varun won a silver medal in the 25 m dash and so did Arjun. Harpreet won a bronze medal in the same race. Gautam, a tall boy, won a bronze medal in the 100 m race. Kulwinder, who narrowly missed being a part of the Indian hockey team in the Atlanta Special Olympics, won a bronze medal in the 100 m race. Ashok Kumar won a bronze medal in the 100 m race.

Paramjit, Gautam, Ashok and Gurpreet won a bronze medal for the team in the 4x100 m relay race. Mini was the only girl of the contingent to win a medal. She won a bronze medal in the 50 m race.

Mr Suran Singh, Principal of Nirdosh, said, “Success has acted like a tonic for these children. Their behaviour has improved dramatically. They are happier than before now.” He said a team of the institute would also play cricket matches on November 11 and 15. He hopes that more victories are in the offing for these children.
