Pulse polio contest

LALRU, Oct 27 — Twentyeight students from nine schools of Dera Bassi block participated in a ‘pulse polio competition’ organised by the Health Department at Baba Prithavi Chand Azad Memorial Hospital here.

The participants took part in drawing, slogan and essay writing competitions based on the theme of polio eradication.

Dr Rameshwar Chandran, Civil Surgeon, Patiala, was the chief guest on the occasion. He stressed the need to create awareness among students, villagers and slums dwellers so that the polio eradication drive could be made a complete success.

Sangita Saini of Lala Sarvan Ram Memorial School, Lalru, and Sipra Sharma of Sarav Hitkari Vidya Mandir, Dera Bassi, won the first and the second prizes in essay writing competition, Shilpa Bakhasi of Samta Public School, Lalru, and Mishu Bhardwaj of Sukhmani International Public School, Dera Bassi, bagged the first and the second prizes in slogan writing, while Ravinder Kaur of Sarav Hitkari Vidya Mandir, Dera Bassi, and Preeti of Samta Public School, Lalru, were placed first and second in drawing competition.

Later the winners were given bicycles and certificates of merit.

Besides residents of the surrounding areas, Dr Daler Singh Multani, SMO, Lalru, Dr Ram Kumar, SMO, Dera Bassi, Dr Sangeeta Jain and some prominent doctors were also present on the occasion.

Dr Grover heads Cardiology Dept

CHANDIGARH, Oct 27 — The PGI Director, Dr S.K. Sharma, today appointed Dr Anil Grover, seniormost faculty member, Head of the Cardiology Department. His appointment follows the acceptance of the resignation of Dr Jagmohan Varma.

Dr Grover takes over at a time when the development of the Advanced Cardiac Centre at the PGI is under way. The Union Health Ministry has sanctioned approximately Rs 12 crore this year for the development of the ACC.

Dr Grover has to his credit the innovative technique of fetal echocardiography, besides setting a rural rheumatic heart diseases registry.

GMSSS-21, SDPS-32 start on winning note

CHANDIGARH, Oct 27 — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, in girls and SD Public School, Sector 32 , in boys category surged ahead in the Chandigarh Junior Ball Badminton Championship which began here today at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41. As many as 12 boys’ teams and 11 girls’ teams are taking part in this three-day meet organised by the Chandigarh Ball Badminton Association.

A budding shuttler

Vikas Kaul, a class VIII student of St John’s High School, Sector 26, is on his way to become a shuttler of repute. Tall and lanky, Vikas practises at Sector 42 indoor hall under Rajeev Tuli, UT Sports Department coach.

Vikas had recently excelled in UT State Badminton Championship by remaining runner-up in boys’ under-13 section, then last week he helped his school along with Adhiraj in winning the Edmund Rice Inter- school Badminton Tournament held at Delhi. Vikas has been selected by the Chandigarh Badminton Association for the National Mini and Sub-Junior Badminton Championship going to be held at Mandya (Karnataka) in the first week of November. When asked, Vikas said that he want to reach dizzy heights in the game for which he was working very hard.

Cricket tournament

Rajat XI , Sector 42, defeated Star Club, Sector 22, by two wickets in the Ist semi-final of the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Cricket Tournament in under-14 section, held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, grounds.

Brief scores: Star Club — 147 all out in 21.3 overs (Gaurav Gambhir 92, Subhir four wickets).

Rajat XI — 150 for eight in 22 overs (Subhir 24, Raghav 15, Parvesh 12,).Back
