— Cheenu Lakhanpal Dr Tribune: In your case you have chosen to delete file from the server after downloading. Because of this, all mails from your Yahoo account have now being transferred to the Outlook Express. But do not worry as you can still access the Yahoo account from anywhere you want. If you wish to have mails in both Yahoo as well Outlook Express, then you should not opt for deleting the mails from the server. Rather download only a copy of the mail. This way you will be able to maintain your mail in both Yahoo as well as Outlook Express. With the present settings you can log on to Yahoo account and check mail. However if you open Outlook Express, then your mails will be downloaded in it. I have a 486 computer with 1.7 GB hard disk. My hard disk developed some problem. Now I want to format it. However, on giving the format command, it gives me message "not ready reading drive C" aborts, retry, fail. Does it mean that my hard disk has been damaged? Can this hard disk be formatted? — Gurmail Singh Dr Tribune: In all such cases, where you feel that all of a sudden your hard disk has started giving problems, you must first run scandisk. In 80 per cent cases, the problem is solved by Scandisk. Errors, like cross-linking, gives an impression that there is a snag in the hard disk. So, even if scandisk does not solve the problem, uninstall the anti-virus programme and use disk tools to diagnose and correct the problem. Despite this, if the problem persists, then you can think of getting the hard disk formatted. If you have tried first two steps, then try low level formatting. If this also does not solve your problem, then you must consultant a competent hardware engineer. I have P III 500 MHz PC with 64 MB RAM and 810-chipset-mother board, 10.2 GB HDD. My problems are: 1. Even though, I shutdown the computer properly it goes into safe mode saying that Windows are not properly shutdown 2. Often it says that it cannot locate R.exe file 3. I usually play lots of games on my PC. Is there any problem with my computer. If yes, please help me. — Vikas Mittal Dr Tribune: I will start answering from your 3rd question. There is no harm in playing games on computer. But since, most of the game are shareware, they add some unwanted files on the system’s directory, which makes it unduly large. Second, these games normally involve a lot of graphics, which in turn makes the computer slow. Moreover, when you install too many games on the PC, there is a potential risk of corrupting the system sometime in future. So, you need to be a bit cautious while installing too many games on your system. Regarding your first question about the message of Windows not being able to shut down properly, you can scandisk from the DOS mode. When your PC boots up, press F8 key, immediately after you see the configuration windows. This will halt loading the Windows and will ask you to choose from normal mode, safe mode and command prompt. Select command prompt. Now the Windows will not be loaded and you will get the command prompt. Go to the directory now having the scandisk. Normally C:\ Windows has scandisk also. Run scan disk from here. I have a Pentium III
550 MHz computer. I encounter some problems, when I start my PC. I
always get two messages. First, it shows the message that Voquette audio
driver download-missing registry. I had once installed Voquette audio
but due to some problems I uninstalled the driver later on. But this
message is always shown — Gurlal Dr Tribune: You have not mentioned, which Windows operating system (Windows 95/98/2000) you are using. For correcting your first problem, which is related to the Voquette audio driver, you will have to restore the registry to the version just preceding the installation of this software. There are commands for restoring registry. We have already published commands for restoring the registry for Windows 95. As far as the problem of getting the password Window at the time of logging on is concerned, there is a software called Tweak, Power Toys available on the Microsoft site, using which you can get rid of this message. I want to prepare a bootable floppy. I have tried doing the same using the command Format A: /S but the problem is that each time I do this I get an error message saying "Invalid media or Track 0 bad - disk unusable." and the new floppy turns unusable (i.e. when I say "dir a:" I get error message saying "General failure reading drive A ". I have tried this on many floppies but the problem persists. Please help — Raj Dr Tribune: It seems that there is some problem in the floppy drive because the command being given by you is correct. Ideally, your computer should format the disk with system transferred on it. But, in your case the floppy is getting corrupted. However, try scanning your floppy disk, using scandisk. If at all there is any problem in the floppy disk, it will be rectified. Now for making a bootable floppy, try making a bootable floppy from the Windows itself. For example, if you are using Windows 95, then Click Start>Settings>Control Panel. In the control panel window, click Add/ Remove programs. You will find three options in the button menu on the top of this window namely Install/Uninstall, Windows setup, Start up disk. Click on the Start up disk. Insert a floppy in floppy drive and click on Create disk button. This will make a full bootable floppy disk. I tried a lot for free Net phone on sites but I could not get registered.
