Dasehra venue row resolved: Admn
Tribune News Service

SAS NAGAR, Oct 6 — Even as the local Fire Department has expressed its reservations over holding the Dasehra celebrations adjacent to the site of tents for holding the shows of Amar Circus in Phase 8 here, the local administration today claimed to have resolved the impasse between the local Dasehra Committee and the management of Amar Circus over holding the Dasehra celebrations.

The effigies of Ravana, Meghanada and Kumbhkarna will be consigned to flames in one corner of the Phase 8 ground, which is around 80 metres from the encircled area of the circus. The police force available with the Phase 1 police station and the Central Police Station will be deputed to control law and order. Officials are keeping their fingers crossed as a gathering of around 10,000 festival revellers is expected on the occasion.

The Station House Officer of the Central Police Station, Mr Balwinder Pal Sharma, today intervened in the matter after being directed by the senior officials. After members of the Dasehra Committee refused to change their venue to some other site in Phase 8, the SHO held parleys with members of both parties. It was decided that the effigies would be erected in one corner of the ground at a distance of about 270 feet from the enclosure of the circus. Mr Lala Chand, general secretary of the Dasehra Committee, said no rockets and other crackers which spread on bursting would be used in stuffing the effigies. Moreover, some suitable distance between the stage and the enclosure of the circus would also be kept.

The management of the circus, as part of the compromise formula, had decided to reschedule its 7 p.m show to 8 p.m as a preventive step. The animals of the circus would be kept at a safe distance and fire tenders would be in place to check any untoward incident.

It may be pertinent to mention that the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) had given permission to the circus prior to the permission given to the management of the Dasehra committee. Both parties maintain that the local administration should have kept in mind the venue of the Dasehra before given permission to the circus.
