An evening of fun, music
Form Our Correspondent

LUDHIANA, Sept 30 — Yesterday was a night of fun, splendour, music, dance combined with lights and excitement of students of College of Veterinary, who celebrated ''vets night'' at Pal Auditorium, PAU, after a gap of over 15 years.

The grand show, and the scintillating performance by students, made it a truly remarkable night. The students were agog with excitement and eagerly waited for the function to start. Mr Alok Shekhar, Registrar, PAU, was the chief guest.

The function started with a solo song by Balbir Singh followed by dance performance Kahne hi kya by Jaspreet Sohail.

Then there was a Western group dance by Nitin and his party. After the dance Prasad and his partner played guitar and mandolin. Vishaldeep presented self-composed Punjabi song, Kuch bol de. The onlookers swayed the tune of Chhaiyan-chhaiyan,on which five students performed a group dance. Zindua staged by students of the third year.

Audience seemed to be on a high after listening to Manu Garg's rich voice. The audience was tapping their feet when the popular song Gur nalon ishaq meetha was sung. The folk dance on Long da lishkara by a group of girls held people mesmerised. Prabjot Kaur and Navjot Kaur danced in great coordination in white shirts and blue jeans.

Some students also presented a skit for which they asked an apology in advance, so that nobody felt hurt. Finally it was bhangra, the best part of the evening.

The audience was surprised when gifts were distributed among them.

Mr Shekhar released the college magazine on the occasion.

An exhibition was also organised earlier in the day where various stalls were put up that ranged from career guidance and academics to stalls like request songs. The students moved around stalls excitedly put up by the Canadian High Commission.

Environmental awareness through poster-making, fancy dress competitions
From Our Correspondent

LUDHIANA, Sept 30 — To bring about awareness on environmental pollution in children, inter-house poster-making and fancy dress competitions were held at BCM Arya Model School here today.

All students of the school took part in the poster-making contest. Some painted a crying tree, others a weeping Taj Mahal and still others painted smoke emanating from a chemical factory. Slogans like ‘Grow tree, get fresh air free’ and ‘Save mother nature who takes care of lives’ on the posters, made them even more catchy. There were charts showing the rate of increase of pollution as also causes and ways to combat this menace.

For the fancy dress competition, students from Classes I to V participated. Harshdeep, who stood first, was dressed up as a pollution control centre and spoke on certain checks that should be imposed. Vrinda, who stood second, acted as a tree whose leaves were falling due to excessive pollution. Neha, who was declared third, posed as a petrol pump pointing out unnecessary wastage of fuel. Hema, who bagged the consolation prize, acted as a polythene bag. There were other students, dressed up as wild animals and one as a super market, whose eatables were contaminated due to pollution.

The judges on the occasion were Mrs Anuja Kaushal, Mrs Aggarwal and Mrs Meenu Arora, all teachers from the same school. Mrs Monika Dhoul, the art teacher, was the coordinator of the event. Mrs Paramjit, principal, said, ‘‘The contests were held to make the students and their parents aware of the menace of pollution. For the poster-making contest, I made sure that all the students of the school take part. However, out of the total 4000, only a couple of hundreds of selected posters could be put on exhibition today.’’
