Lashkar-a-Shivba branch in Jammu JAMMU, Sept 30 (PTI) — Calling upon all nationalist forces to join its mission to liberate occupied Kashmir, a Maharashtra-based organisation today demanded dismissal of the Farooq Abdullah government in Jammu and Kashmir, handing over the valley to the Army and reorganisation of the state. Announcing the opening of the organisation branch here, founder-member of Lashkar-a-Shivba, Prof Anil Holi Sumudhara told mediapersons here: “We appeal to all sections of society to unite and prepare themselves for sacrificing their precious lives for the preservation of national integrity.” He said there was a need to awaken people and encourage them to be involved in the solution of the long-standing Kashmir problem by adopting a tough stand. Dr Ravi Acharya, executive member of the organisation, advocated formation of a separate state of Jammu, union territory status for Ladakh and “honourable” return of migrants to the valley after handing over the valley to the Army. They also lauded the role of the Army and the security forces in curbing militancy in the state. Lashkar-a-Shivba youth President Milan Rout declared that they would work shoulder-to-shoulder with the village defence committee and the security forces in curbing Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in the state. They also demanded abrogation of Article 370. Earlier, 200 volunteers of the organisation hailing from Maharashtra paraded the main streets of Jammu, raising anti-Pakistan and anti-terrorism slogans. The organisation would soon set up a branch in the Kashmir valley. |
Sabha seeks 33 pc
quota for women JAMMU, Sept 29 — The Silk Istri Sudhar Sabha has demanded 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament, the Jammu and Kashmir Gurdwara Board and the District Gurdwara Parbandakh Committees. This was stated by the general secretary of the sabha, Ms Gurjeet Kaur. She demanded that Sikh women should be provided due representation in technical and professional courses and in government jobs. Addressing a press conference, the president of the All-Jammu and Kashmir State Akali Dal, Mr Jasdev Singh, appealed to the government for the early settlement of the refugees of 1947. He demanded that the compensation announced by the Central Government for the refugees should be increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 1 lakh. |
BSF to adopt 1,000 pupils: DIG
SRINAGAR, Sept 30 (PTI) — The Border Security Force (BSF) has prepared a programme to adopt 1,000 poor boys and girls of government schools in the valley and bear the expenditure of their education up to Class XII. This was stated today by the DIG, BSF, Mr
B.N. Kabu. Commandants of BSF battalions stationed in the valley had been directed to enlist deserving students with the cooperation of school authorities, he said addressing a function at Khanyar Girls High School today.

Attempt to smuggle
liquor foiled KATHUA, Sept 30 — The Deputy Sales Tax Commissioner, R.H. Rizvi, foiled an attempt to smuggle two truckloads of whisky and beer into Jammu and Kashmir under the garb of vegetables yesterday. The staff posted at Lakhanpur became suspicious of two drivers of pumpkin-laden trucks who were on their way from Chandigarh to Srinagar. The drivers had submitted forged documents of vegetables issued by Ropar-based firm. On checking, the staff found 570 cases of whisky and beer in each truck hidden under pumpkins. The drivers, however fled the spot. |
