LUDHIANA, Sept 26 — Boxer Gurcharan Singh is the lone Indian hope for another medal in the Sydney Olympics. He entered the quarter- finals of the boxing competition in 81 kg class. He is a resident of Rorewal village near Machhiwara, 40 km from here.

His father, Captain Jagir Singh, is a retired Army officer. This brother Hardeep Singh, petty officer in the Indian Navy, is also a boxer. He won the bronze medal in the President Club Championship in Indonesia earlier this year.

Captain Jagir Singh is very optimistic. He told Ludhiana Tribune that they were hoping that their son would come home with a gold medal. Asked about the performance of her son in the next bout, his mother, Ms Sukhwant Kaur said, “I hear that his next opponent is very strong. I am praying for an excellent performance by my son”.

He disclosed that he went to the Telecommunication Department to get telephone facility so that he could encourage his son on the telephone. The officer concerned refused him.
