Forum orders companies to pay back CHANDIGARH, Sept 24 — The UT District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum II, has directed the Chairman of Sagar Suri Estates and Finance Limited and Delhi Automobiles Limited to pay back the deposits to all 17 persons who had filed complaints against them. The forum has also ordered that the parties that have been found deficient in the performance of their functions should also pay the maturity amounts to the complainants, besides the interest on the deposits at a rate of 12 per cent per annum. The judgment to this effect was passed here by the forum Bench comprising its President, Mr R.P. Bajaj, and members, Mr H.S. Walia and Ms Urvashi Agnihotri. The complainants had deposited money with the Chairman of Sagar Suri Estates as fixed deposits for different periods and interest. The complainants said, in spite of the maturity of the fixed deposits, they had not been paid the principal or the interest. They also said various letters, legal notices and reminders to the company had proved ineffective. A reply filed by the Chairman of the company said the complaints were not maintainable on the grounds that the complainants were not consumers. He, however, did not deny that the amounts had been deposited with the companies by the complainants. The company raised an objection regarding the territorial jurisdiction of the forum on grounds that the main office of the company was in Delhi and it did not have a branch in Chandigarh. The objection was, however, turned down on the grounds of an authority in which the National Commission had held that if a part of action arises in a particular area, the forum concerned had the jurisdiction to take up the case. The forum said, after trying the case on merit, it had decided that the respondents should pay back the amounts deposited with them by the complainants along with the maturity amounts. The Bench also directed the respondents to pay an interest to the complainants at a rate of 12 per cent per annum. |
Singer-composer Devki at his melodious best CHANDIGARH, Sept 24 — He is a man with a host of music feats to his credit, right from his music direction in Hindi film Aansoon to the blossoming of his singing talent under the guidance of music directors and artistes like Jagjit Singh and Anoop Jalota. Devki Nandan is surely not a man next door. He has a strong profile to back him. He was in the city to enthrall the audience with the magic of his voice. In fact, his being at the Pracheen Kala Kendra’s Bhaskar Rao Auditorium last night was just by default. The singer-composer was roped in by the Kendra authorities to present a musical evening while he was in the vicinity, directing music for three films at the same time. Apart from the Hindi film mentioned above, Devki Anand is also directing music for a Punjabi and a Haryanavi film. Speaking to The Tribune before the performance, the artiste said, “I was not quite prepared to perform, but I am really very happy to be in a place of my moorings. I have been in Mumbai for 20 years wrapped with struggle. I have really fought the destiny to reach this place. But I must tell you that I have been very lucky to be associated with masters in the field.” Devki, who began working under the tutelage of Hans Raj, later went places. He has not only sung duets with singers like Asha Bhonsle, Anuradha Paudwal and Alka Yagnik but has also composed music for several Hindi films and TV serials. He has also sung for many serials. Interesting point in his profile is that he entered the field with a pop score to his credit. “That was the time when popular music was not relished. That was the reason I went on to learn ghazals and then bhajans from Jagjit Singh and Anoop Jalota, respectively.” The musical prowess of the artiste bared with each of his performances tonight. Setting the moods with a delectable couplet, Zindagi yun to ek paheli hai, magar ye maut ki saheli hai, he went on to sing Madan Pal’s legendary composition, Mili hon ruhen to rasmon ki bandishen kya hain, in raag Mishra Bhairav. Following this, he presented his own composition Tere ishq se pehle to.... Gautam Dhar on tabla and Rinku on guitar complemented the artist’s melodious voice, even as he kept experimenting with different taals during his renderings. His ghazal Jab raat gayi teri yaad aaye in raag Pahadi was also quite well received by the audience. |
