‘Sanskrit is language of the devas’

CHANDIGARH, Sept 18 — The Department of Dayanand Chair for Vedic Studies, organised a three-day national seminar on “Arthapurushartha in Vedic literature” at the ICSSR Complex of Panjab University today. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof S. K. Gupta, Vice-Chancellor, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He described Sanskrit as the language of the devas and the soul of Indian Sanskrit literature.

Prof Ram Prakash, who was the special guest, spoke on the philosophy of Swami Dayanand which recognized that righteously acquired wealth is the only artha, while that attained by vicious means anartha. He also underlined the importance of removing of economic disparity among various sections of society.

Dr Krishan Semval, Secretary, Sanskrit Academy, Delhi chaired the seminar and described dharma as the instrument for obtaining worldly prosperity and real emancipation.

Prof Vikram Kumar, Chairman of the department, read out the keynote address and dwelt on the thoughts of Swami Dayananda in Arthapurushartha. He called these concepts as being revolutionary in view of the significance of karma and not varna by birth.

Dr Vasundhara Rehani gave a brief account of the history and activities of the Department of Dayanand Chair since its inception in 1975. The seminar has been organised with the financial grant of the HRD Ministry, and is part of the celebration of Sanskrit year. More than 40 delegates from all over the country are taking part in the seminar.Back

 

Ramanjeet is Miss Fresher

CHANDIGARH, Sept 18 — In a colourful evening organised by Government College for girls, Sector 11, to welcome new comers to the college, the crowning glory of being Miss Fresher went to Ramanjeet Brar, while Ruby was declared the first runners-up and Anuradha was declared the second runners-up. The Principal, Mrs Vijaylakshmi, who was the chief guest, adorned winner girls with crowns and sashays and welcomed the new students to the college.

HC modifies order in Roopali case

CHANDIGARH, Sept 18 — Curtain falls over the “Roopali” story with modifying his earlier order and discharging the rule in the matter, after Mr R.S. Gujral, Home Secretary, Chandigarh, who was present in court, stated that Roopali’s claim to be a daughter of Capt Suresh Yadav, who was allegedly killed in “Operation Vijay”, were not correct.

The UT Home Secretary filed a detailed affidavit stating that on verification it was found that the news report was not correct. The SDM (Central) and Director of Social Welfare were directed to inquire into the news report. In the report submitted to the Home Secretary the Roopali is stated to have repeated her version as in the published report. She also repeated that her uncle, Sanjay Kumar, maltreated her and she left home, when her uncle appropriated the financial assistance given to Kargil victims”.

It was stated in the fax message received from the District Collector, Latur, that there was no residential address conforming to the description given by Ms Ropali in Kallari village in Latur and that there was no person by the name of Capt Suresh Yadav a Kargil martyr from entire Latur district and there is no college by the name of Vidya College. In the two colleges that offer the M.Com course no girl by the name of Roopali studied in 1999.

The Army authorities also contradicted the claim of Roopali’s stating that the claim made by her was not tallying with the record that the Army maintains concerning Kargil martyrs.

The Home Secretary stated that in view of the inquiries made so far it became clear that the details mentioned in the report on Roopali were not correct. She had so far not given any other facts regarding her actual address, details of her parents and reasons behind leaving her home and relatives.Back

 

Rajat Sharma appears in CJM’s court

CHANDIGARH, Sept 18 — Rajat Sharma, an anchor of Aap Ki Adalat, appeared today before the UT Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Sant Parkash, in a defamation case filed against him by Mr Bhajan Lal, a former Chief Minister of Haryana.

In the case it was alleged that on October 20,1996 , Zee Television news reader, Sudhir Sharma read the news that Mr Bhajan Lal houses at Hisar and Adampur had been raided by the CBI and some documents were recovered.

The next day Mr Bhajan Lal condemned the report and filed the case on October 23, against the owner of the Zee Channel, Mr Subhash Goenka, News Editor Rajat Sharma and news reader Sudhir Sharma.

Today the owner of the Zee TV filed an application that due to health problem he would not be able to appear in the court. The Chief Judicial Magistrate adjourned the case till September 20.Back

 

Judicial remand for courier firm manager

CHANDIGARH, Sept 18 — The manager of a Delhi-based courier company, Harish Verma, was sent to 14 days judicial remand today by the UT Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Sant Parkash, in a theft case.

The accused along with another person have been arrested by the city police on the charges of stealing travellers cheque worth 15 lakh on September 16. The cheque was issued by a Chandigarh-based immigration company in favour of the US Embassy in New Delhi. When the accused was arrested only cheque worth Rs 7.50 lakh recovered from him.Back
