India acquiring new role in S. Asia: PM

WASHINGTON, Sept 17 — It was a scintillating finale to what was admittedly a highly successful visit of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to Washington as the BJP-sponsored Indian American community last night extended a warm welcome to him and hailed him as an outstanding leader who has given India a new and respectful image in the comity of nations.

SRINAGAR, Sept 17 — A Deputy Commandant of Border Security Force (BSF), his wife and three jawans were injured in an attack by militant while nine persons including seven militants, were killed and 14 injured in Jammu and Kashmir since last evening.

Laden survives bid on life
ISLAMABAD, Sept 17 — Osama bin Laden, the most wanted Arab dissident, escaped an attempt on his life a few weeks ago when unidentified assailants ambushed his convoy in the southwestern Afghan province of Kandahar, a newspaper reported today.

7 die in civic poll violence
Curfew in Dariapur, polling suspended

AHMEDABAD, Sept 17 — Curfew was clamped in Dariapur area of the walled city after seven persons were killed and 43 others, including nine policemen, injured in group clashes and police firing today during polling to five municipal corporations and three municipalities.
