I have bought an assembled PC with 20 GB HDD, 64 MB RAM, Intel Celeron 466 MHz. I intend to load Win 98 and Win NT4 on separate partitions on the hard disks for dual booting. I wanted to make partitions of 2-4 GB for Win 98, 4 GB for Win NT4 (NTFS) and rest of the space in one or two partitions. When I tried to do the same, it started giving some problem. I’ve made primary DOS partition 2 GB and the rest of the space was configured as extended DOS partition. I installed Win NT 4 on a 4 GB partition created out of the extended partition by formatting in NTFS. The remaining space is then again configured in 2 partitions. Now I’m able to see a total of 4-5 partitions with a total size of approx. 14-15 GB only. Where has the remaining 4-5 GB space gone? What is the best way to deal with this problem? — Mahendra Kumar
Dr Tribune: This is a common problem for a majority of persons who install Windows 98, along with Windows NT. Generally, the formatting under the NT installation causes the problem of not showing your space left besides the primary DOS partition. This space has not gone anywhere and you can correct this problem by using Norton Disk Utilities. However, since this matter is related to a one-time installation of your operating system, the best way to deal with this problem is to consult a software expert.
How is it possible to
know whether the hard disk in the computer has developed — Amrit Pal Singh
Dr Tribune: There are two most common methods of knowing about the bad sectors on your hard disk. You can run Scandisk to know the status of your hard disk. For more comprehensive test, you can select thorough option, while running the scandisk. Or, you can use the command CHKDSK in the DOS mode. It will give you a complete summary of the status of your hard disk on your computer screen.
Can we connect more than two computers through direct cable connection and share Internet on all PCs. — Rajesh Uppal
Dr Tribune: It is not possible to connect more than two computers through direct cable connection. For connecting more than 2 PCs, you need a LAN (local area network). Therefore, you can also not share the Internet connection.
First of all, I appreciate the effort of The Tribune for bringing out special edition on computers. I am feeling enlightened after reading your articles on "How to select hardware". If I purchase a AMD K6-2 500 MHZ assembled computer, what should be the specification of other components such as the motherboard, RAM, hard disk and their make in order to make it ideal for faster Internet access and software development in Oracle 8 and VB 6.0. — Vikram Bhalla
Dr Tribune: If you are looking for a computer for professional purposes, like software development in Oracle or Visual Basic 6, besides expecting good Internet performance, then the better option for you would be to go for AMD Athelon instead of AMD K6-2 500. As such there is no problem with AMD K6-2, but Athelon would be better. However, if you wish to go for AMD K6-2, then SIS 630 is a good motherboard. You should always choose RAM of good brands, like IBM, TechRam or Simtronics, which comes with warranty. Nowadays, 7200 rpm hard disk has become a part of standard configuration, so you should insist on any 7200 rpm hard disk like IBM or Seagate.
I have a Celeron system with a SB 16 sound card and Motorola SM 56 internal modem. Can I record phone conversations using a sound recorder if I dial through the phone dialer? Are any special cable connections required between the sound card and a modem? — Nitin Mehta
Dr Tribune: I think it will not be possible to record a conversation using a phone dialer. However, you can refer to our download sections for various software that offer the facility of recording a conversation. Recording a conversation depends upon the interface of the software, so please check the details of the software before actually downloading it. |
