TT tourney begins today

LUDHIANA, Sept 7 — The Xth Prithipal Singh Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament is to begin in Punjab Agricultural University here tomorrow.

More than 250 players of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab will take part in the meet. Some international players are also supposed to take part in this three-day tournament. The events will include cadet boys’ and girls’ singles, sub-junior boys’ and girls’ singles, junior boys’ and girls’ singles and men’s and women’s singles. Attractive prizes will be given to winners.

Though preliminary matches will begin on Friday at 1 pm, Mr Alok Shekhar, Registrar of the PAU, will formally declare the tournament open at 4 pm.

Tilak Raj of the Punjab State Electricity Board at Patiala, who has represented Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh in national tournaments, will get this year’s Prithipal Singh Memorial Award on Sunday, the concluding day of the tournament.

SVM school win cricket meet

LUDHIANA, Sept 7 — Sanatan Vidya Mandir (SVM) Senior Secondary School won the Ludhiana Zone -1 Inter-School (under 16) Cricket Tournament that concluded here. Excellent batting by Karan and Deepak led the team to victory. Karan hit two boundaries in the 15th over to reach the target of 93 runs set by Sanatan Dharam Pracharak (SDP) Senior Secondary School. Karan made 21 runs in just 16 balls and remained not out, while Deepak made 24 runs in 23 balls.

The SVM team won the toss and invited the SDP boys to bat first. The SDP team was all out for 93 runs in 19.2 overs. The SVM boys reached the target in just 15 overs after losing seven wickets.
