4-day badminton meet from today

CHANDIGARH, Sept 6 — The Sector 42 indoor badminton hall wore a festive look today as the Chandigarh State Badminton Championship gets underway here tomorrow. The four-day meet evoked a massive response as more than 150 players in different categories entered their names, who will vie for top honours in this championship organised by the Chandigarh Badminton Association. The events will be organised in under-10, under-13, under-16, under-19, men and women, mixed doubles and veterans events.

Col Raj Parmar, organising secretary, said prominent players taking part in the annual meet include Ashish Sharma, Amit Sachdeva, Geeta Aggarwal, Kusum Sharma, Deepak Sidhu, Mala Gaba, Isha Sharma, Parnita Verma, Harleen Kaur, Muneesh Bansal, Oscar Bansal among others. The tournament will also serve as a basis for the selection of UT junior and senior team in both boys and girls section for the forthcoming North Zone Inter-State Badminton Championship to be held at Delhi between September 15 and 17.

Mr K.A.P. Sinha, Joint Secretary Finance, UT Administration, will inaugurate the meet.

Basketball team
Manjula Guleria of MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, and Harminder Singh of SD Public School, Sector 32, will lead Chandigarh in the 51st Junior National Basketball Championship to be held at Sarkaghat (HP) between September 9 and 15.

According to a press note of the Chandigarh Basketball Association, the members of the team are: girls — Manjula Guleria (captain), Sarita, Amanjot Kaur, Navneet Kaur, Manpreet Kaur, Jatinder Kaur, Ranjeeta Rana, Rubina, Sapna, Rajeeta, Shweta and Anchal Stand bys Lucky Bhatia and Kavita.

Boys — Harminder Singh (captain), Harbir Singh, Bhavdeep Singh, Sangram Singh, Chander Prakash, Amit Kakran, Gaurav Rawat, Haramardeep Singh, Vikram Singh, Arun Gayat and Bhupinder Singh. Stand bys — Balraj Singh and Bikram.

Amarjit Singh and Paramjit Kaur will accompany the team as coaches, while Mr KS Bharti as manager.

Adventure association
The Adventure Association of Chandigarh will organise the North Zone Adventure Sports Festival in the near future, according to Mr PS Brar, Secretary of the association. The association will hold the general body meeting on September 8 to decide the events and generation of funds for this prestigious festival.

Canoeing association
D.S. Jaspal and M.S. Cheema have been unanimously elected as president and secretary of the Chandigarh Kayaking and Canoeing Association. Mr Inderpal Singh, assistant secretary, Chandigarh Sports Council, also attended the meeting as observer.

The other office-bearers are: senior vice-president — K.S. Sahota; vice-presidents — M.S. Badan, M.S. Ghuman, Baldev Singh and Avinash Chander Sharma; treasurer — H.S. Sehgal; and joint secretaries — S.S. Gill and Prabjeev Singh.

Cricket tourney
The Khalsa Super League Cricket Tournament will start from September 9. The meet will be held at the PGI and the DAV College grounds. As many as 12 teams have been divided into four pools and each will have league matches. The topper of each pool will qualify for the semi-finals.S

MC employee suspended

SAS NAGAR, Sept 6 — An employee of the octroi collection wing of the SAS Nagar Municipal Council, K.L. Saini, has been placed under suspension by the Administrator, Mr Jaipal Singh for allegedly allowing a truck to pass without paying the octroi. According to the information the theft of octroi was detected by an Assistant Executive Officer of the council on Sunday.
