Looking back

The superstition that a horseshoe is a symbol of luck and good fortune comes from the following:

One day the devil, who had hoofs like those of a horse, visited a blacksmith to get a loose horseshoe nailed to the foot. The blacksmith realised that the customer was a devil and so he caused him great pain while fixing the horseshoe. The devil cried and begged for mercy. The blacksmith promised to release him if he promised never to enter a place where a horseshoe was displayed. The devil agreed and that is the reason why people still believe that a horseshoe brings good luck and fortune.

* * *

Almost a hundred years ago, the word horse was a slang for a trick or joke played on someone. That is why now the word ‘horse-play’ and the idiom ‘horse around/about’ means to play around and indicates lack of seriousness.

Horses in legend

Trojan Horse: A legendary wooden horse built by the Greeks to help them capture the city of Troy during the Trojan War.
