A degree is just a mouse-click away

Thanks to the advancement in the IT sector, today schools, colleges and universities, are right at our doorstep, says Sumesh Raizada.

Those who sought knowledge had to move away from home. Gurukuls and the Nalanda University of ancient times had scholars from China. Each era bears a testimony to the fact that there is no short-cut to advanced education.

Times changed. With the advancement of society, institutions of higher learning became closer to people. Thanks to the advancement in the IT sector, today schools, colleges and universities, are right at our doorsteps.

No more hostels. Gurukul and travelling to learn. Not anymore. Online learning courses are here to see that a learner need not move away from home and still gets a fair exposure to latest in art, science, engineering, medicine and commerce.

IT revolution has reduced the geographical distances and cultural barriers around the globe and one need not run to get a visa or pass a test for getting admissions to the foreign course.

Some of these courses are available on the Net at an affordable price. You can attend lectures and workshops, participate in discussions with professors and fellow students, appear in examination, and even get a degree or certificate, just by a stroke of few keys and a click of mouse. Access to the computer and an Internet connection is all that is required for these online courses.

There are several Indian and foreign institutions, which are providing Net-based courses on IT and computer software. The Netvarsity, promoted by the NIIT, Aptech Online Varsity, and Smart Planet, a division of ZD Net, are some of the Indian institutions which provide real life university experience on the World Wide Web. Those, aspiring for enhancing their skills for promotions or upgrading their qualifications for more lucrative IT careers, can enter the Web site of a particular university and get relevant information about the certified courses being offered online. They can also get themselves registered by filling up the online forms, available on the Web site.

There are online tutorials, exercises, assignments, projects and quiz. Simulated tests provide continuous feedback on the performance and helps in self-assessment. One advantage that online learning provides over the conventional classroom is that students are constantly updated on latest technology and developments, through e-mails and journals. The Net library gives details of available resources, textbooks and web addresses.

NIIT, through its Netvarsity, has launched several short and long duration courses, in arrangement with the Microsoft certified modules like MCSD (Microsoft certified solution developer) and MCSE (Microsoft certified system engineer). For various undergraduate and postgraduate computer courses, all you have to do is to purchase learning modules from the nearest NIIT centre, consisting of multimedia CD-ROM, text material and related software and then get registered on the Netvarsity site of the Internet, by typing user name and password. The course module consists of web- based modules, covering e-commerce, web development, software development and data management. There are computer-based training packages and multimedia CDs that enable students to gain perfection in e-commerce.

The course material is provided, both in the printed form as well as on the Net for downloading, in a comprehensive and well-structured module. Some of the foreign institutions, which are providing e-learning, are University of Florida, Michigan state university, Mahasarakan University, Net World University and the Internet University. Virtual college, which is a consortium of 10 institutions, offers online courses in Microsoft-based computer technologies.

Joining Netvarsity or other online courses is beneficial for those who cannot attend classes due to long distance and time limitations. These are useful for employed professionals, homemakers and students, engaged in other vocational activities. The qualification required for enrolling in various online courses is usually +2, with mathematical background.

The fees depends upon the course content and technologies involved in imparting the training, and can be paid through demand draft, cheque, or credit cards. The drawbacks of online learning are that students cannot interact in person with the instructor or fellow students. Also the charm of campus environment is missing. But all these get offset by the fact that personalised training is imparted with access to the leading institutions, besides having the convenience of time and location. The guidance provided by some of the experts online through e-mails or chatting forums also adds up to the advantages which online learning offers.

Computers may soon help in replacing brick and mortar universities as the means to educate and train young students to be doctors, engineers or IT- professionals.
