139 to get gallantry awards NEW DELHI, Aug 14 (UNI) — One Mahavir Chakra, two Kirti Chakras, three Vir Chakras and 22 Shaurya Chakras are among the 139 gallantry awards announced for armed forces personnel on the occasion of the Independence Day. The President has also approved 108 mention-in despatches to recognise exemplary performance in Operation Vijay, Operation Rakshak and Operation Meghdoot. Mahavir Chakra has been awarded to Capt Gurjinder Singh Suri of 12 Bihar who laid down his life on November 9, 1999, after displaying extraordinary leadership, raw courage and grit when militants attacked a forward defended locality in the Gulmarg sector of Kashmir. The officer who belonged to Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh was hit by a rocket propelled grenade but refused to be evacuated and continued to fight the militants. Seventeen militants of the Mujahideen battalion were killed, two of them by Capt Suri. Kirti Chakra awardees are: Major Deepak Mehra (5 Gorkha Rifles) and Capt Amit Semwal, posthumous, (16 Dogra). Vir Chakra awardees are: Major Gopal Singh Chundawat (19 Grenadiers), Sub Ujeen Singh Shekhawat, posthumous, (19 Grenadiers) and jawan Manoj Kumar Singh, posthumous, (12 Bihar). CBI bags 17 Independence Day awards NEW
DELHI, Aug 14 (PTI, UNI) — cbi Additional Director U.N. Biswas, who is investigating the fodder scam case in which former Bihar Chief Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav is one of the suspects, is among 17 officials of the agency selected for this year’s President’s Medal for distinguished service and Police Medal for meritorious service. Besides Mr Biswas, DIG Ajit Kumar Majumdar, DSPs Shiv Shankar Jha (Bank Security and Fraud Cell) and Nag Narian Singh (Special Crime Branch) have been awarded President’s Police Medal. DIG Rajesh Ranjan and Assistant Director of mdma V. Sivaprakasam are among 13 other cbi officials who have been awarded with Police Medal.
