Dr Tribune

Your article on buying a computer was great. I purchased an Intel Pentium III computer a few weeks ago. I want to know

1 How can I check that the processor installed in my CPU is Intel 700mhz
2. Rpm of my hard disk and its price difference vis-a-vis hard disk of IBM
3.Price of 128 MB RAM of Simtronics and speed of 64MB RAM Samsung.

— Rahul Gupta

Dr Tribune: Thank you for appreciating our effort. Regarding your problems:

1)You can check the speed of your processor by checking the clock speed.

2)A few week ago, 20 GB Seagate hard disks were available in 5400 rpm. Your HDD is most likely to be the same. Price difference depends on what market you are talking about, as it would be different in Delhi and Chandigarh.

3)As far as the speed of 64 MB RAM goes, it should be 100 MHz as your processor seems to be of 100 MHz.

I want to buy a computer for home as well as for professional use. Which computer should I buy?

—Sameer Kansal

Dr Tribune: Buying a computer is a subjective matter and depends on your requirements. If you want to go in for a multipurpose computer, opt for the Compaq's latest range of Celeron.

I want to ask three things:

1) Can we use the computer in a room where cooler is being used?

2) In my computer, I have an Aztec sound card which produces sound in Windows from both speakers, but in DOS it produces sound only from one speaker? Why?

3) I am purchasing a computer with Intel motherboard, which I was told would have an in-built sound-card and a 3-D acceleration card. Please tell me how much MB of speed will be there in the motherboard.

—Gurpreet Singh

Dr Tribune:Though you can use computer in a room, where cooler is being used, yet avoid it if you wish to use it for long hours. Regarding your Aztec sound card, please install the DOS driver for use in the DOS mode. The motherboards do not have speed in MB. The motherboard, which you are referring to, seems to be Intel 810 dual. If it is the same, then its bus speed is 100 MHz.

I would like to know that which of the two browsers (Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator) is better and faster, and which browser supports java, html, activeX, scripts better.

—Nishkam

Dr Tribune: Both the browsers - Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator - are at par as far as the performance is concerned. However for programming purposes Internet Explorer version 5.5 is better. For browsing I have better experiences with Netscape Navigator.

Q: I am facing hanging and booting problem on my assembled Pentium III PC.

— Guarav

Dr Tribune: You have not sent full details about your problem. Still you can check your problem by reinstalling Windows over the current installation without removing it.

I want to access my Yahoo account from an e-mail client, but was unable to do so by using mailstart, readmail etc. I have also tried the pop3 server name as pop.mail.yahoo.com. Please suggest on how to access my yahoo account from a pop3 mail reader.

—Lalit Singla

Dr Tribune:You have not mentioned which e-mail client you have used. Try using Eudora. In Eudora, under the main personality, use your Yahoo log in ID which should not include @yahoo.com. Only your log in ID should be used. You have used mail server pop.mail.yahoo.com correctly. This POP3 server has been tried and it works well. The only reasons for this problem is:

1) Wrong login ID. As said earlier use only the first part of your e-mail.

2) Use pop.mail.yahoo.com in incoming mail server or POP3 server. If you use this address in outgoing mail server or SMTP server, then it will not work.

I have e-mail accounts with VSNL, yahoo, hotmail and rediff. I want to save online time while checking incoming mail at web-based e-mail sites. Can all mails be downloaded onto the hard disk at one go? Or better still, can we configure Outlook Express send and receive web mail as it does with my VSNL's mail?

—Gurpreet Singh

Dr Tribune: You can consolidate your Yahoo, VSNL and rediff account in your rediff web mail. So when you check your mail, it will check for all three accounts one after the another. While for your Hotmail account, you can configure Outlook Express?

I have a Celeron 433 MHz, computer. It is neither attached to UPS nor a CVT. My question is: whether an inverter can replace UPS or not. If not why? What kind of changes can make it suitable for computer? If somebody formats his hard disk, whether its data is recoverable or not.

—Satnam Singh Arora

Dr Tribune: Ideally, you should use UPS for your computer. An inverter cannot replace the UPS. There are technical reasons for this. Computer requires Sine waves, which are generated by the UPS, while an inverter generates square waves, which are harmful for the computer. Rather than looking for changes, better option would be to go for an UPS. However, if you intend to use an inverter for your computer, then you can attach a CVT with the computer and then connect it with the inverter. In this case, the inverter should be big enough to take the load of the CVT.

Regarding your second problem, formatting erases the data beyond recovery. So it is impossible to recover data from a disk, which is being formatted.

I have a problem while surfing the Net. When I open any website (for e.g. www.yahoo.com) it loads slowly. It takes about 10 minutes or even more to load a full-page. Please tell me what should I have do to speed it up. I connect it at a speed of 11, 500 and sometimes at a less speed but it always shows Receiving 4800bps.

—Neeraj

Dr Tribune: You should check out the average speed in your area. If you feel your connection is too slow then check your telephone connection properly. Do not use a phone cable with joints. Also try to avoid using extension on the telephone number you intend to use for surfing. Try out other net connections, especially Glide and VSNL. I hope these measures would solve your problem.

I have a 566 mhz (Celeron) with 64mb RAM, 10.2 GB hard disk (Seagate) with 810 intel chipset motherboard(aaza)with onboard AGP& Soundcard. I just purchased a computer. I want to know that should I change my motherboard to the one in which AGP and soundcard are not on board — Prabhi

Dr Tribune: From your letter it is not clear, why you want to change the motherboard. You dealer has given you a good motherboard. So apparently there is no need to change. However, if you want to use your computer for some professional purposes, which involves high-quality graphics and sound, then you can change your motherboard. Otherwise, your motherboard is good.

I have been trying to down load the Iternet utilities from various sites mentioned in "Login Tribune". However I have not been able to download anything as at when I start installing these utilities my computer reads "estimated time 0 min 3 sec". However after some time, the time starts increasing drastically and even after one hour I am not able to install it. Why? (my processor is PIII at 450Mz")

— Mayank Mathur

Dr Tribune: Normally for downloading data or software from Internet, the time required is high. If your modem supports high speed and your Internet speed is excellent even then also you will take roughly 45 minutes to download a 5 MB file. From your mail, it seems that the speed of your connection is not fast. Kindly read the reply written to Mr.Neeraj for improving the performance of Internet at your end. Moreover, also please refer to the article Tips & Tricks on page 2 regarding, optimising your modem. All these measures are hardware-related. If your telephone line and exchange does not support high speed, then there is not much to do in this case.

My computer does not read from CD-ROM. It checks the power while booting, but does not read data from CD. When I check from DOS prompt, it gives error CDR 101- Abort, Retry, fail. Kindly send me details about the solution.

— Amanpreet Singh

Dr Tribune: It seems that this problem is related to the driver. If you have loaded a CD driver other than the one provided by your hardware manufacturer, try using the original driver. Although, CD drivers are universal and the Samsung’s CD driver works in almost all major CD ROM. But it creates problems sometimes. So try reinstalling your original driver.

I purchased Motorola SM56 internal modem for my computer. I have to load it on WINNT server. I tried many times to load it. But, when I load it after all the settings, it restarts the computer and gives message that SM56 not installed properly. I load it on COM2 and COM2 is free. Please suggest a solution. It works well with Windows 98.

— S.P. Singh

Dr Tribune: Installing an Internal modem in NT server set-up is little difficult. You must go strictly as per your manual and select the suggested Com port and IRQ setting as described. Internal modems should be installed on Com3 or Com4 ports. Since Com2 is an external port, so the error in installation is obvious. You can try again by installing it on Com3. Go as per the manual, because there are several steps involved in setting up this modem like you will have to add the port first, then you can proceed with Installation.

I have Windows 98 installed on my computer. When I shut down my computer I use to get message"I’ts now safe To turn off your computer". But after some software problem I reinstalled Windows and still, I do not get the above said message when I shut down. Can two clients having one ID of ISP use Outlook Express simultaneously? If so, how? Why my monitor is getting magnetised, although I have placed speakers (180 watts) at a distant place?

— Kashmir Singh

Dr Tribune: Try reinstalling the Windows and opt for fresh installation rather than upgrading. This problem could be due to corrupt registry. If you are not able to get rid of this problem even after fresh & full installation, you must consult your software vendor for providing necessary software for restoring registry. As far as accessing using your Outlook simultaneously is concerned, it is possible provided your ISP supports 2 simultaneous log-in. Regarding your monitor, I have not been able to understand exactly what do you mean by "magnetised". However, if you are referring to colour patches on your monitor, consult your hardware vendor, as it is a minor problems related to settings in monitor.

We can receive messages on the mobile phone sent to us from the websites like ‘unimedia.net’. I would like to know if I could receive my emails on my mobile phone?

— Ira Singh

Dr Tribune: You can receive e-mails on your mobile. All you need to do is contact your Mobile operator and ask for your mobile e-mail ID. Normally, it is provider.com. You can ask people to send you a copy of emails at this number (CC), along with your regular e-mail. In this case, you will get 1 mail on your mobile and the other in your regular e-mail box. Alternatively, you can download unimobile, from and configure it to forward your web mail and pop mail to your mobile.
