Hansraj Trust to build serai in PGI CHANDIGARH,
Aug 13 — Patients and their attendants at the Advanced Pediatric centre (APC), PGI, can now look forward to comfortable stay following the decision of the Hansraj trust to construct a serai near the APC. The foundation stone of the serai is likely to be laid on August 23. According to Dr Lata Kumar, Head of the Pediatric department, as per the proposed plan, the three-storeyed building has provision of two blocks with 48 rooms and 12 dormitories, two big halls, one for recreational purposes and the other dining area. The dormitories will have two beds each and a locker facility, besides common bathrooms. The serai will also have its own laundry and cloakroom facilities. The serai will be situated between the APC and the proposed cardiac centre, hence will serve both these centres and has much wider repercussions. A memorandum of understanding has already been signed between the trust and the PGI Director, Dr S.K. Sharma. Dr Anil Narang, head of the neonatalogy wing, revealed that the trust had offered to construct the serai almost six years ago but the work could not begin due to the non-availability of land. But now that land had been allocated, the construction plan would be shortly finalised and executed. The completion of the serai will be a boon for patients and their attendants who have to presently rough it out on the floors of the
corridors and the unkempt lawns for days together. This is also posing health and hygiene problems for the indoor patients as chances of infection increase in unclean surroundings. Dr Narang pointed out that the centre, which was built to cater to a specific number of patients and attendants, was presently rendering service to at least 10 times the original number. On an average the APC had 200-odd indoor patients, besides 40 to 50 in the emergency, 300 OPD patients and 200 walk in various special clinics daily. Keeping in view these numbers and the attendants accompanying them, it was difficult to maintain the required cleanliness in wards, particularly the toilets. Even the security of the place was at stake since people from various strata of society stayed inside all the time. Hence, the coming up of this
serai building would not only provide them with shelter but also ensure proper maintenance of the APD, added Dr Narang. The trust, which is going to spend lakhs of rupees, is keen on keeping the maintenance of the building with it so that it does not deteriorate like many other buildings of the PGI. However, security will be provided by the PGI. Though the present serai complex offers all facilities to the inmates, yet since it is located at a distance of 2 km, most of the attendants who wish to be close to their patients hesitate to go there and keep hanging around in nearby area. |
