I am using a Motorola SM56 internal fax modem, but no fax software is working with it. I have tried several software programmes like Super voice, QuickLink messaging, etc., but could not send my fax through this modem. Kindly suggest a solution.

— D. R. Gulati

Dr Tribune: In your mail you have not written which operating system you are using. If you are using Windows 98/95, try uninstalling the modem and reinstall it on Com 3 port again. When you have installed it, choose region as CR80. You can try Windows Fax, which comes free with windows and can try Winfax32.

Whenever I try to get connected to the Internet, I get the following message : Dial Up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of networks protocols you specified in the Server Settings. Check your Network configuration in the Control panel then try the connection again.

— Deepak Goyal

Dr Tribune: Check the following points to find the solution.

1. In Control panel > Networking, have you selected TCP/IP as a protocol.

2. In dial up networking properties, have you selected TCP/IP

3. Uncheck "wait for dialtone" in dial up networking properties

4. In dial up networking properties select server assign IP address and leave other columns blank.

I have a 56 kbps internal modem, which gives me a constant speed of 28.8 kbps. My questions are: 1.Why does it connect me at 56Kbps? 2. How much role does RAM plays in Internet? 3.How can I surf fast?

— Amit Bedi

Dr Tribune: The speed of your modem depends largely on your telephone lines. Moreover, the 56 kbs, represents only the maximum speed of this modem and does not represents the connection speed. As far as RAM is concerned, higher RAM helps in faster browsing. But it does mean that it can improve Internet connection. So if you have a good telephone line and modem, higher RAM helps you browse faster.

I want to know that once we empty the recycle bin how can we recall all deleted files as someone has deleted my important files and emptied the recycle bin afterwards

— Sanjit Singh

Dr Tribune: There is no way to recover the files which are removed from the recycle bin. However, there are some softwares like Microsoft Word, which creates a back up file also. So if you have made your files in this kind of a software, then you can recover your files from back up files. Else there is no solution.

I am interested in knowing how to share Internet connection. I’m having two systems. Right now I use Internet on one. Also please tell me in detail, the hardware and software for this facility & where I can find it.

— Saranjit Singh

Dr Tribune: Please refer to the Section Free downloads. It has details about one such software which enables Internet sharing. You can download this software and try it out. As far as hardware is concerned, Intel has a solution for this. But I think for using Internet on two computers only this software should be enough.

I have a hard disk in my assembled system with a capacity of 2.1GB. I am interested to change it to higher capacity with a good speed.

1) Which hard disk is available with a higher RPM and approximate costs.

2) Which Scanner should I buy, and what to see before buying a scanner.

— Saurabh Gupta

Dr Tribune: All major hard disks like Seagate, Quantum and IBM are available with 7200 RPM. Out of these, IBM is a good hard disk and depending upon the availability the tentative price for 10 GB hard disk should be around Rs.7,500. For scanners, UMAX, HP, and Microtek have good range to choose from.

I have ASUS CUV4X motherboard and SBLive soundcard . It plays all softwares that came with its CD except the audio CDs. But it doesn’t play any sound file residing on hard disk and is also unable to play Mp3 CD and gives the message "A fatal exception 0E ...."

— Sachin

Dr Tribune: There are following possibilities to the problem mentioned by you.

1. Your Mp3 player has got corrupted, therefore whenever you try to play something using this software, you get this problem. Try installing another Mp3 player..

2. The files that you are trying to play are corrupt.

I have a AT cabinet. Should I get an ATX cabinet. I work a lot on the Internet.

I also want to know, is it better to go for a DVD-ROM drive than a CD drive. As the technology is changing, should I wait for the drives to become cheaper or should I go for it now.

— Vishal

Dr Tribune: If the motherboard of your computer is ATX, then there is a point in having a ATX cabinet. Otherwise it has no practical use. Moreover, It has nothing to do with Internet. Regarding the CD-ROM & DVD. I think that CD – RW (read, write) is a better option as of now. Also the peripheral prices are not likely to come down in near future.
