‘Admn neglecting Punjabi language’
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 6 — The Punjabi and Punjab Vikas Manch, concerned at the “indifferent attitude” of the Chandigarh Administration towards Punjabi language and Punjabis, has decided to submit a memorandum to UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen JFR Jacob (retd).

Ms Harjinder Kaur and Mr Tarlochan Singh, chairperson and president of the manch, respectively, alleged that Punjabi was being given step-motherly treatment in offices of the Administration and the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh.

While migrants from other states are rehabilitated in the colonies, original residents continue to be at the receiving end. The government and private schools are not giving due importance to the Punjabi language, it was pointed out.

Criticising the corporation for subscribing to only 12 Hindi and English newspapers and not even a single Punjabi daily, they demanded that influx of migrants from other states should be checked so that the original character of the city could be maintained. Instead of rehabilitating encroachers on government land, the Administration should provide basic amenities to the inhabitants of the UT villages. They also demanded that the Punjabis should be given preference in government employment in the UT.
