Dispensary amidst filth, squalor
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, July 29 — The civil dispensary in Dadu Majra Colony is functioning amidst filth and squalor. The dumping ground, located adjacent to it, besides emanating foul smell, is responsible for the outbreak of various diseases.

A visit to the dispensary today revealed that the upkeep and maintenance of the building is no better. The approach road to the dispensary is marked by slush and dingy pools of stagnant water, which are perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. The drainage system in this area hardly exists as water gets accumulated during the monsoon. The choked sewerage further contributes to the unhygienic conditions.

The doctor on duty points out that the incidence of asthma and skin diseases is high among the residents of this area. During a medical camp organised recently by the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, GMCH-32, it was observed that 80 per cent of the residents of Dadu Majra Colony were suffering from one or the other lung disorders. They had indicated that the poisonous gases emitted by burning of polythene, plastic and other such materials was the cause of this.

The rag pickers, who keep sifting through the garbage day in and day out, report to the RMPs and civil dispensary with various skin ailments. These children are under constant threat of acquiring deadly diseases if the authorities do not do something about the dumping ground, which is a storehouse of infected hospital waste, besides routine garbage.

Few women patients at the dispensary say life is virtually hell for those residing here as mosquitoes do not let them sleep at night. It is difficult to sit out in the open after 7 pm, says one of them. The rearing of pigs by certain households is also creating nuisance for the dwellers as these further contribute to the unclean surroundings.

The staff working in the dispensary say during the monsoon, it becomes difficult to sit and attend to the patients due to the foul smell which comes in through the broken window panes. There is only a part-time sweeper, who is not keeping the entire compound clean. The wild growth of congress grass on all sides of the building also poses a health hazard.

Few residents complain that they do not get medicines and have to buy these from outside at exorbitant prices. The dispensary should have adequate basic infrastructure for the benefit of the residents, they add.
