From Surbhi Bhalla

LUDHIANA, July 5 — City boys and girls have proved their mettle by topping in various exams. What took them to the top? As part of the continuing series we ask another topper the secret of his success.

Bhuvnesh Bharara — “Aim high and you will definitely reach the top”. This was the motto that kept Bhuvnesh going. June 22 was a lucky day for me as I secured the 6th rank in AIIMS. My childhood dream to get in to the best medical institution had been fulfilled.”

Bhuvnesh stood 16th in the CBSE, PMT. He had also cleared the written examination for AFMC but he did not appear for the interview. Bhuvnesh gives the credit of his success to his parents and also to his sister. All of them helped him to pursue his goal by helping him in every possible way. He makes a special mention of his teachers as they, too, were very helpful. He advises the young students: “If you want to join medical college, you must be sincere in your efforts. You must put in eight hours of study. You should be systematic and have a practical approach. We should be ready to accept failures as they are stepping stones to success.”

My father, Mr Balraj Kumar, is a businessman but knows the importance of studies and hence provided each and every facility to me. His mother, Shashi Bala was also very supportive. Bhuvnesh is a very talented student, he got the best speaker award in his school. He is an NTSE scholar.Back

Today the institute is spread over three campuses, Ludhiana (Punjab), Hisar (Haryana) and Palampur (Himachal Pradesh) apart from a net work of research stations/sub-stations scattered all over the State. Punjab Agricultural University was established under the Haryana and Punjab Agricultural Universities Act, 1970. The university presently has six constituent colleges. The College of Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Home Science Ludhiana and Muktsar, Veterinary Science, and Basic Sciences and Humanities Besides a number of Regional research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras have been established in various agro-climatic regions of the State to meet the research and extension needs of these regions.

With the objective of catering to the needs of the State of Punjab in the discipline of Agricultural Engineering, the College of Agricultural Engineering was established in the year 1964. The college gives excellent training facilities in the field of undergraduate and postgraduate education and has made notable contributions through its six departments and supporting units.

The various departments are: Farm Power & Machinery, Soil and Water Engineering, Processing & Agricultural Structures, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering these have developed several new technologies which have been adopted by the farmers and entrepreneurs not only in the state but throughout the country. Other than imparting education, the College plays a leading role as a solution to the problems of the farmers and industry with the help of problem-oriented research and speedy technology transfer. In 1975, the college was recognised at the national level through the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry Award. The College of Agriculture is a premier constituent college of the PAU. within 3 months after the Partition of India, the college started functioning in the buildings of the Khalsa College, Amritsar. In September 1949, the college was shifted to the rented buildings of the Malwa Khalsa High School, Ludhiana and in 1959 again shifted to its present building on the Ferozepur Road in Ludhiana. During the past 25 years, the college has produced about 5000 graduates, thereby contributing significantly towards the development of human resources for the state and the country. In recognition of outstanding achievements of the college in the field of agriculture, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry presented an award to the college in 1977.

The Biotechnology Center of the institute provides research facilities to the staff and students of the PAU in plant tissue culture and molecular biotechnology. Moreover, the center has been approved in a number of specialization fields, namely Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Vegetable Crops, Floriculture and Landscaping, Entomology, Forestry, Animal Science, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Zoology, and Veterinary Immunology.

The very concept of an agricultural center contemplates a range of educational programmes for all those who come within its influence. Basic Sciences and Humanities provide such a breadth and a sound educational base for all constituent colleges of the university. In October 1965,with the object to advance frontiers of knowledge in the field of Humanities, a College of Basic Sciences and Humanities was established. This college offered all courses falling within the purview of Basic Sciences and Humanities and till date plays an important role in the resident instruction programs of the university. A Veterinary School which was later raised to the status of a college was established at Lahore in 1881.
