PGI’s CT scan again out of order
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, June 30 — The sole CT scan machine in the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is once again lying out of order, putting scores of patients to inconvenience. In the last month and a half, the machine has gone out of order for the second time.

Sources say on an average the machine is out of order for nearly 10 to 12 days in a month either due to the tube getting worn out or due to certain other technical problems. They further allege that most doctors then refer them for these tests to the private diagnostic centres, where the patients have to pay exorbitant charges. The facility for CT scan is neither available in the local Government Medical College nor Sector 16 hospital, hence poor patients find it hard to get the test done from outside.

The machine, which was installed for the benefit of all those who come to the PGI, particularly for those admitted to the emergency ward, is mostly out of order. Patients pointed out that in some serious cases, MRI tests are being done instead of CT scan but in most of the cases, proper diagnosis is not being done in the absence of this facility. Another patient, who had come all way from Hisar lamented that he had to pay Rs 1000 for getting the head scan done from outside, instead of Rs 300 in the PGI. Few others alleged that the machine was often deliberately spoilt so that doctors could get their commission from the private centres and some of them even suggest the place they should go for the test.

The Medical Superintendent, PGI, Dr A.K. Gupta, when contacted says that the machine is out of order since the tube, which was acquired recently from Germany, has got damaged during transportation. He explained that the problem arises because the tube gets worn out due to the frequency of exposures day in and day out and there is provision of a spare tube. Hence, we have no option but to wait for replacement, which takes time as it has to be imported. He said tube was under warranty period and likely to be replaced shortly free of cost.Back

1,300 forms for making new votes distributed
From Our Correspondent

SAS NAGAR, June 30 — Forms for the making of new votes for the Municipal Council elections are being distributed by the authorities during the current period for claims and objections of the draft poll rolls.

According to reports, 1,200 to 1,300 forms were distributed so far. The draft poll rolls have been put on display at the SDM’s office with one week given for claims and objections, ending on July 3.

Most of the forms were taken by residents of unauthorised jhuggi colonies. Their votes were earlier not made as they were living in encroached areas.

In a change in procedure, now only a member of the family concerned can fill forms for making votes during the period of claims and objections. During the last poll there were certain prospective candidates who brought hundreds of forms for making fresh votes in their wards, raising suspicion that there were bogus voters.

It is reported that the number of objections so far is small.

Residents had sought copies of the draft rolls at the individual level, but as this was not possible the authorities have decided to give these only to the authorised representatives of political parties.Back
