Jalandhar blast kills two
JALANDHAR June 29 — Two persons were killed and at least 12 were injured, three of them seriously, in a powerful explosion which took place in a roadside tea stall kiosk at the Lamba Pind roundabout on the city outskirts late last night.

Portugal backs India’s claim to SC seat
LISBON, June 29 — India’s claim to a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council gained further impetus last night when Portugal extended support to it.
The Portuguese Prime Minister, Mr Antonio Guterres, said after his meeting with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee: ‘India’s claim deserves our full sympathy’.

Pak army told to aid infiltrators
JAMMU, June 29 — The Pakistan army has supplied waterproof tents to militants operating in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir. According to official sources, the waterproof tents have been supplied on demand from the militants who conveyed to agencies across the border that during rains and snow it will become difficult for them to seek proper shelter.

MONROVIA, June 29 — Rebels in Sierra Leone have freed 21 UN peacekeepers, all Indians, held hostage in an eastern Sierra Leonean town, Liberia’s President Charles Taylor said today.

 
India, Russia sign defence deals
MOSCOW, June 29 —Defence Minister George Fernandes today capped his three-day visit to Russia by signing a number of agreements on Indo-Russian defence cooperation with his counterpart Marshal Igor Sergeev.

Cong workers rounded up
MUKTSAR, June 29 — Even as the district police has allegedly rounded up hundreds of Congress workers to stop them from holding a black flag demonstration in front of the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, tomorrow when he is on a visit here, Mr Jagmeet Singh Brar, MP and senior vice-president of the PPCC, has urged the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Governor to intervene into the matter to stop state-sponsored “terrorism.”

Justice Koul indicts police 
CHANDIGARH, June 29 — Justice M.L. Koul, who inquired into the police firing on workers of a spinning mill in Rewari district, has held the police guilty of using force not commensurate with the unrest shown by the agitating labourers and has described the police firing as “indiscriminate.”
